San Antonio Queen of Soul, Inc.
has selected John H. Tyson as its
new board president. Tyson will
serve as the president of the Exbcu-
live Board 1996-1998. Also elected
were Terri Williams, vice-presi-
dent; Nichelle Moore, secretary;
John Gardner, treasurer, Vonzetta
Hickman, immediate past presi-
dent; and Vannie M. Greene, cor-
responding secretary.
The Queen of Soul is one of the
oldest Black pageants in the Stale
of Texas, and will celebrate its 28th
pageant next March. It is also the
oldest Black organization to take
part in San Antonio's annual fiesta
activities and as a member of the
Fiesta San Antonio Commission.
Lawrence T. Walters, a retired
postal supervisor, will be the guest
speaker at the T. E. Gilmore
Scholarship Banquet. The banquet
will be held May 18attheHoliday

Karyne Conley, was a teacher, prin-
cipal, and advocate for the district's
most economically disadvantaged
children from 1951-1989. She was
• principal of Bumet Elementary
; School for 17 years.]
Since her retirement Jones, an
active member of St. Philip's Epis-
copal Church, continues to work
with children as a reading tutor at
the Eastside Boys and Girls Club,
docent for the San Antonio Sym-
phony Youth Concerts, and presi-
dent of the San Antonio Area
Council of Girl Scouts. She serves
on the boards of San Antonio 2000,
Victoria Courts Day Care Center,
UNCF, and Communities in
Schools.
Jones was inducted into the San
Antonio Women's Hall of Fame in
1993, and in 1995, the San Antonio

Givens takes directing talents to
Japan, conducting workshop
Noted San Antonio gospel musician
and director Gary Givens is taking his
musical expertise to Japan. Givens
will depart May 17 for Okinawa, Ja-
pan where he will conduct a week-
long gospel music workshop, spon-
sored by the United States Air Force.
The workshop will take place at
Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa
Women's History Coalition and the and will focus on musical techniques
San Antonio Area Council of Girl and the history of gospel music.

Church's "Pride of the Eastside'1
committee has released the names of
the recipients for its first annual
Telecomputer Benefit and Commu-
nity Service Awards Banquet. The
banquet is to be held June 1 at the
Fort Sam Houston NCO Club.
Receiving the Establishment Award
are Old Wheatley High School, Fort
Sam Houston, St. Philip's College,
Sam Houston High School, Carver
Cultural Center, and St. Paul Square.
