The United Negro College Fund
(UNCE) will celebrate educational
excellence during its annual
nationally televised telethon “An
Evening of Stars.” The program,
slated to be broadcast locally on
KRRT-TV (Channel 35) from 9
p.m. to 1 a.m. is planned for Jan. 6,
2001.
Last year’s telethon raised more
than $13.5 million in cash and
pledges. Locally more than
$70,000 was raised.
Besides showcasing numerous
national headliners and celebrities,
“An Evening of Stars,” will
spotlight local efforts benefiting
UNCE-supported colleges and
universities, underscore the
importance of higher education
and spotlight UNCF member
colleges and universities as well as
the achievements of UNCF'
students and alumni.
This year’s show will feature
concert performances by some of
the music industry’s top artists,
including Tina Turner, Aretha
Franklin, Santana, Lionel Ritchie,
Frankie Beverly and Maze, Levert,
Kevon Edmonds, Mary Mary,
Yolanda Adams, K-Ci and Jo JO,
just to name a few.
Thirty-nine colleges ' and
universities with a combined total
enrollment of about 60,000
students currently receive UNCF
funding. Four of those colleges are
higher education, administers
more than 450 programs annually,
assists member colleges in
obtaining grants for special
projects, coordinates student and
faculty enrichment programs and
fccilitatcs access to state-of-the-art
technology for students and
Acuity. In its 56-year history.
UNCF has raised more than $1.5
billion to promote higher
qgucatioii achievement ip the
African American community and
has helped more than 300,000
African Americans earn
undergraduate and graduate
degrees.
UNCF students typically come
from families whose average
incomes are less than two-thirds
the national average for college
students. As a result, almost 90
percent of students attending
UNCF member colleges require
some form of financial aid to
attend college — compared with
about half the students at private
colleges nationally.
