POINT, from page 1
just the Register-andmainly because
these untrue words that trivalized
what your Black newspapers do in
the community were uttered by none
other than one whose complexion is
the same as mine.
This publisher stated to the world
that all of the Black newspapers—
with the exception of bis—were "little
more than clipping services." As a
Black business owner and a Blade
person, I am insulted, angry, and,
yes, hurt.
First of all, not only does this
publisher impugn the credibility of
the Black press in this town, but he
also, by implication, impugns the
intelligence of everyone who
purchases or reads any of the other
three publications. Why would an
intelligent person want to buy
newspapers that are "little more than
clipping services"?
But the most important thing is that
that statement simply isn't true. Our
paper and the other three "mainly
clipping services" were on hand to
cover—just to name a few events—
the debates between the District 2
candidates, the Alamo City Chamber
of Commerce luncheon with the
Mayor, the Zulus awarding $5,000in
scholarships lodeserving high school
students, the Booker T. Washington
Elementary School parents'concems
over one of their prindpals, Judge
Kelsey's campaign, the recent Buffalo
Soldiers' visit, and theTexaspremiere
of the Tuskegee Airmen movie. We
seldom ran into this "non-clipping
service" paper.
Newspapers get their news from
several sources, and we-nor he—are
no different. Our commitment is to
bring you as much news and as wide
a variety of news as possible. So, we
read a lot and listen to a lot of TV and
radio, we go out into the community,
we do telephone interviews, and we
work froqj your press releases. I'm

sure all three of our competitors use
all or a combination of these sources.
Each of the four Blade newspapers
here has a special niche and a special
appeal, and that is great. The Black
community is not a monolith, so
diversity within our community must
be acknowledged and appreciated.
We are blessed to have four avenues
of expression.
It is tough out there and it's very
competitive, and we have to fight
hard for our share of the general
advertising dollars in the market ?nd
our share of the token advertising
dollars given to the Black media.
But. it seems to me that each one of us
has enough good things going for our
individual papers that we ought to be
able to position our paper against our
competitors without reinforcing racist
stereotypes about Black newspapers
and Black people.
