Even though we are sticking our
necks way out, we are going to
name the Rattler "all-conference”
touch football team of 1949. About
the toughest thing a fellow can do
is name some kind of "all” team
because usually everybody dis-
agrees with the pickin’s except the
guy who is picked. Well, at least
18 will agree w.th us.
The champion Rattler club dom-
inates the selections for the grid
league season with four men mak-
ing the mythical nine. The Dorm,
losers only to the Ractler club,
takes down three positions, and the
Mud-daubers the remaining two to
close out the all-conference first
team selections.
On the second team, the selec-
tions are pretty well divided, with
two Rattlers, two Rho Betas, two
Dormites, two Barons, and one
Frosh making the grade.
Here are ‘ the RATTLER “all-
conference’ ’touch fotball teams:

St. Mary’s sports fans had sev-
eral pleasant surprises in the last
few weeks—first our boxing team
runs off with five outa five over
Moonglow, and lo and behold we
take Trinity in an important golf
match.
Congratulations to Coach Wil-
lard Brown for bringing out our
boxing boys so well in such a short
time. To be truthful about the
whole thing, we didn’t believe the
St Mary’s men had the necessary
experience for the boys from Moon-
glow, but scein’s believin’.
As far as the golfing picture is
concerned, some of the members
of the team, too, were pessimistic
before the match with Trinity, but
now all that can be seen on the
countenances of the victors are big
smiles and even bigger plans.

The ex-students’ Round - up
packed the gymnasium to the raf-
ters (well, almost). Was that an
indication of the size of the crowds
that will attend the Rattler cage
tilts this season?
The schedule calls for some very
good games, none of them easy.
That’s the way Bro. Bill Siemer
and his boys want it.. However,
nothing is more disappointing than
a small crowd on a home night.
Let’s give our boys a better showing
at the gate than last year and let
them know we’re behind them. All
you fellows who have been yelping
about school spirit—here’s your
chance to show some. After you’ve
seen one game, you won’t want to
miss any more of them.
Well, we’re finally through pre-
dicting the winners (??) for the
football season of 1949. That is,
we’re finished picking them until
the bowl games roll around on Jan.
2. But for you, our loyal adher-
ents, we are giving you the scoop
about the next issue of the Rattler
and let you know that a real "All-
American” team will be picked. By
the way, you boys from north of
Dallas, we want to let you know
that unless something drastic hap-
pens, that froggie-legged boy from
Rice, James Williams, will prob-
ably make the All-American team
(Rattler style).

Rattlers Lose Cage Thriller
To Lackland Warh 58-55
St. Mary’s hustling Rattlers threw a scare into the Lack-
land Air Force base Warhawks in the season basketball
opener for both teams Tuesday night, Nov. 28, at Lackland,
but in the closing minutes the power and reserve strength of
the Warhawks proved too potent and the Rattlers were edged
out, 58-55.
Tickets on Sale
ForHome Games
Season ticket books for all of the
St. Mary's home basketball games
exc.pt the one with Trinity have
been p.aced on sale. The season
ticxet, good for 15 games in the
St. Mary s gym, will provide a con-
siderable saving for both students
and exes and other Rattler fans.
The Rattler club and Rho Beta
Gamma fraternity are selling season
tickets on the campus for $3 each,
which entitles a student to attend
all of the home games for about 20
cents each, a season’s saving of
$1.50.
The Alumni adult season ticket,
which the St. Mary’s Ex-students’
association has on sale, is being of-
fered for $5 and affords a saving of
about 27 cents a game or some $4.05
for the year.
Admission on this ticket will
average about 3 3 cents a game in-
stead of the usual 60 cents. If an
ex-student does not wish to attend
all of the games, he may bring a
guest in on the ticket for half of
the home contests or as many
guests as he has punches on the
ticket for the games.
Ero. Eugene Gittinger, athletic
director, has inaugurated this ticket
plan to try to promote interest in
the team and to have large crowds
at the home games this season.
The Rattlers played the Lackland
team that had won 34 and lost only
six games and had participated in
the x\ational AAU tournament the
season before, on more than even
terms for the first three quarters,
leading 15-13 at the end of the first
quarter, 30-29 at the half, and 47-
43 at the third quarter mark, before
losing out in the home stretch.
lad Tom Sheridan was St.
Mary’s lethal offensive weapon for
the evening, dropping in eignt field
goals and five tree throws for a
mce 21 total.
High point honors, however,
went to Lackland’s colored jump-
shot artist, Len Tucker, who
pushed through 23 tallies. Charlie
Barberio of the Snakes tied with
another dusky lad from Lackland,
Ed Schenck, for the third high
total, each hitting for nine points.
Crippling the Saints’ chances
were the losses of their two starting
guards, Jim Veltman and Ted Beaul-
lieu, through the excessive foul
route. Veltman went out before
the end of the initial half and
Beaullieu shortly after the mid-
way intermission. Although the
fracas was pretty rough, St. Mary’s
fouling 27 times and Lackland be-
ing penalized 2 5 times, the airmen
did not lose a man.
Bro. Bill Siemer’s classy crop of
freshman cagers, particularly Dick
Kosar and Buzzy Gittinger showed
up very well in the second half,
as did squadmen Jim Gambon and
Alex Haas.

A tackle on the St. Mary’s foot-
ball teams of 1939-40-41, Dick
Cocke, is back in San Antonio and
recently paid a visit to the cam-
pus.
Locke is equally well-knGwn as
the driver of the "Blue Goose” bus
that hauled the Rattler grid teams
of that era around the country to
earn St. Mary’s the title of "the
most traveled football team in the
nation.”
During the war J o^ke was in the
Air Force and coached some serv-
ice football. He recently took over
joint-operation of a service station

St Mary's Keglers
To Organize League
An attempt is still being made
to organize a bowling league at St.
Mary’s, according to John Castille,
who has been ramrodding early

A list has been placed on the
main bulletin board between the
Administration building and Rein-
bolt hall for prospective keglers to
sign and thus far some 29 have
registered. Still more will be
needed if a bowling league is to be
organized at St. Mary’s, Castille
said.
The schedule is divided into two
halves, with the first half ending
January 6, and the second extend-
ing until February 7.

Even Series with
Rattler Golf Team
The season’s record of the St.
Mary’s golf team stands at three
victories and two defeats following
a setback in a return-match with
Lackland Air Force base Nov. 22
at Lackland by a 16-5 score.
In a previous match the St.
Mary’s par-Rattlers had taken the
measure of the airmen, 8 j/2 to 3 }/?,
at Brackenridge park, but Lackland
proved a tough team to beat on its
ftome links and gained revenge.
Ed Wesolowski was the only Rat-
tler divot-digger able to break the
ice, winning all three points over
Sgt. Mishko of Lackland. The team
of Bill Porter and Chuck Ribelin
was beaten by Sgts. Sealey and
Goosie, and Al Sturchio and Don
Nichols fell before Capts. Mueller
and Hester in other matches.
A "rubber” match with Lack-
land is planned for the future, as
are contests with other service and
college tee-teams.
