A Mother Fighting Back! A Two year battle with police will end
I have something to say about aa
; article that appeared in the Register
; last week, my son Kevin Roberson
was mentioned in the article.. First
about (Little Joker), a young man
who was shot and killed a couple of
weeks ago. Editor s note (Kevin and
Paul Johnson (Little Joker) were in-
volved in a shoot out. Mrs. Roberson
said that during that shooting inci-
dent that Little JokeraraHriendsshot
Kevin's friend in the hand and arm
and that the young man had to un-
dergo three surgeries and one more
in pending.
On another occasion, Joker and
company pulled up to Kevin in car
and pointed a gun at his face. He
pulled the trigger, but the gun
jammed, Mrs. Roberson said. "If it
had not, my son would not be here
! • today."
Kevin reported it to police, but
. nothing was donf, Mrs. Roberson
; said. She believes these cops know
a lot what these boys are doing
around Jolly Time. She was told by
someone who hangs around J.T. that
a policeman told him "Why haven’t
you all shot them niggers yet.."
Mrs. Roberson alleges this is they
type of stuff the police are saying to
our children on the Eastside.
So, I say to you parents everywhere
before you talk about someone, you
need to clean up your own back yard.
Kevin is not the first person to have
a run in with the law, and he will not
be the last one. Kevin was arrested
last month in the shooting death of
Karisha Harps.
The shooting of Karisha Harps was
an accident. Mrs. Roberson donated
$300 toward the funeral of Karisha,
because the family had no moneyfor
the funeral. She also gave more
money at the funeral when the col-
lection plate was passed around.
The San Antonio Police on the
Eastside is very upset because on
October 22, 1994, Kevin was beat
up, and kicked and spit on by some
of the officers who had handcuffed
him. She said he was hog tied be-
cause the officers said he had 14
ticket warrants on him.
"My aunt called me to say Kevin
washing beaten up by the cops and
for me to get down there."
"When I arrived they were still
beating him, so I ran up to ask, what
was going on and another officer
there put out his arm and almost
knocked me down.
I was told that Kevin had 14 tick-
ets and they kcfcp coming up. I told
the policeman in charge that Kevin
had met with the judge and was
given more time to pay the tickets. I
Roberson shows a bruise on his arm that his mother says was inflicted by San
Antonio police officers.

could go home and get the papers to
verify my story. But it did no good.
Kevin was taken to jail in the patty
wagon.
Mrs. Roberson reported the inci-
dent to the FBI. and the Aiternal Af-
fairs Office of the SADP. Pictures
were taken of Kevin. Statements
were taken by the police and the FBI.
Mrs. Roberson feels that Kevin’s
troubles began when he started dat-
ing a young woman. Before Kevin
started dating the woman, a law en-
forcement officer had dated here.
Mrs. Roberson said the woman had
been in trouble before and the law
enforcement officer made a deal with
her not to arrest her as long as she
performed sexual favors. There was
also rumors that drugs were going
to be planted in Kevin's car, Mrs.
Roberson noted, adding, that she re-
ported that information to the
Eastside Police Substation.
Mrs. Roberson have several inci-
dents where the police have stopped
Kevin and wanted to impound his
car. Officers have come to there
home to arrest him for traffic tick-
ets. Kevin was not home at the time
and officers went through a car and
A word from a
concerned mother
Following his arrest,
Kevin tried to commit
suicide. A guard found
him hanging from his
cell and saved his life.
Mrs. Roberson’s advice
to other parents is to keep
up with your children
and not be afraid to take
action if you feel that
your child has been
treated badly by law en-
forcement officers. Don't
wait for the other person
to come forward. You
step out and take care of
your owp regardless of
the risks. 1

incumbent council woman has brought energy and
good humor to her task, representing well both her
constituents and all citizens. According to her
campaign material, having promised to return calls

Mrs. Roberson tells about a Black
policeman who came to her house
and arrested him for tickets to keep
the other officers from arresting him
because someone might cause Kevin
bodily harm.
If police had taken action earlier.
Kevin would not be in jail and a
young woman would not have been
killed.
Kevin is a slow learner, and reads
on a first grade level. There is no way
he could figure out a caller ID num-
ber and go where the victim was.
Someone else had be to involved in
this.
There is a lot happening with our
sons and daughters. We can’t blame
the judge in this case, but the police
for their mishandling of my son and
not taking actions against their own
officers. *,

Dear Mr. Roberson:
The San Antonio Police Department's Advisory Action Board has
reviewed your complaint concerning the conduct of three
members of the San Antonio Police Department. This seven
member board has determined that your complaint, which
prompted an Internal Affairs investigation, has revealed that
one of the member's conduct merits disciplinary action.
It is anticipated that one of the officers will receive a
written reprimand. This disciplinary action will be noted in
the officer's personnel file and will serve as a reference in
the event there is a recurrence of this type of action by the
officer.
Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention.
Sincerely,
A1 A. Philippus
Chief of Police
