Byron Scott will always he remembered as the guy who missed the wide
open shot for a trey, the shot that sent the Lakers home for the season.
James Worthy had kept the I akers in the game all through the fourth quarter
and when it came to the final seconds, they elected Byron Scott to do the
hoHOfFTe hiew +t, and the biggest upset m play-alt history w<>ni down ihr
drain. 1 he worst team in the playoffs playing the best team and coming
within a lew inches of the biggest upset in play-off history!
Scott says that was his lasf game as a I aker Byron. I’m sure f)r Jerry Buss
will agree. “What have you dime for me lately”.........goes in anything, w ith
anybody, all over the world f riendship, loyally......not when money is at
stake
Sixkm> it will be the powerful Suns with Oliver Miller grabbing some of die
headlines from Suns MVP, Sir Charles Barkley Sir “Slam Skull” said he
needed some players to go with his talents, and he would go to the NBA
finals. ( an Houston or San Antonio stop him? Seattle ."?? I see the Suns
m the f inals with ( hicago, but the Bulls will have to have Bull screws to K()
the Kinicks
We will be watching NBA basketball all the way near July, and the owners
get rich and richer with every kind of gimmick they can sell to the public who
will buy all the crap they market....lor money. That is the American way,
pardner If they give away $50 million in I .otto, you can bet they made S5(X)
million from all die suckers who play the game. A buddy told me last week,
“ I play one, two, three and live dollars every week, and I don’t miss it:”
I et him add it up at SI5 a week for 52 weeks and check the chunk he is out
of Winning? lie has yet to, even once. Me, I never play a dollars, and I
would miss it at those numbers. But that’s life, and it is a game of chance on
Iust about everything we do.
Wonder what the Pocket fans will say if we lose in die playoffs before the
finals, like the (filers? “Wait until next year!” like they have always cried
tiller a bitter loss It will be interesting to see. Judge.
I he fans could not have enjoyed an NBA game any better as the Texas v.
Louisiana Senior All-Star Basketball Classic was an exhibition of shun
dunking. Liven the little white boy, Ben Anderson, of HBl1 got in on the act
to the contingent of fans he had watching his every move. Ben was captain
o! the I exas squad as he was die first player we had selected way back last
< fetober as we started getting the Texas roster ready. Bo ()utlaw can block
shots and leap just a Olajuwan does for the Rockets We don’t know what
round he will go in, but he will play in the NBA for somebody, just as I said
Lamest ( iivins would when I first saw him man All Start lame in Montgomery,
Alabama.
Mike Wilson of SMU (SWC champ's) shot the lights out from far and near
as he rolled up a 2d point game to cop MVP honors on the Texas Squad.
Melvin Johnson of Coach Billy Brown’s (McNcese State) Louisiana squad
hit for 25 points as he was the MVP of the visitors. Torrence Williams of
Southern (SW At champs) was a terror on the boards f or the Louisiana team
as he blocked sh< >Ls, ram jammed, and slummed dunk after dunk as the crowd
went wild.
I or those w ho missed this, one of the best ever All Star Games, well, you
missed die best sideline act in basketball as Coach Alex “Mud” Gillum did
Ins number that had fans in stitches....his is indeed something that should be
on a highlight film.
Dr A W Real and Walter Yates won awards for service to athletes in the
community as both have long records ot Athlciic/Sports related activity in
Houston, Texas.
More than 14 scIkmiIs from Texas and Louisiana sent players to this 10th
Annual (’ollegeGame. Now we ;ire looking forward to taking ten players to
Nassau this summer to play the Bahamian All Stars in their new field house
m Nassau ()ne of the major airlines (we are talking to three) will comp the
trip tor a party ol 15. The Minister of Sports is directing die trip that we will
play. Two games in one weekend...should be fun.

"Do,i> Lost.....
We II-Loved.....
Reward for Return''
This eye-catching sign was posted
on a busy intersection, blocks .away
from the address. As I re-read the
first word. I wondered if equal
concern is being shown for family
members w ho are wandering apart.
Sad stones are behind the frag-
ments ol newspaper information.
"Anyone knowing the whereabouts
of..."
Increasingly, family life is be-
coming;! major concern for people
throughout the world. A major
magazine devoted an entire issue
to a serious examination of the
family, lhe issue stated that the
family unit is now being recoil -
strutted. Increasing urbani/ation
and baffling economic factors
threaten home life as it has existed.
Pets-or people—may be stay de-
spite the promise of reward for
them. Whatever the outcome in
each case, the haunting refrain rings
in our ears and in our hearts, "we
need one another.1*
I was very touched this Mother's
Day by the telephone calls, cards,
and gifts 1 received from young
people, and some not so young.
Bull had a need and desire to reach
out to somebody as mother figure.
Their mothers were gone, and for
that day and time in their lives,
they felt like they were "home
alone."
There is a consensus here in our
city and community that only cer-
tain people have needs worthy of
note, but nothing could be farther
from the truth. Everybody needs
somebody whether Uiey acknowl-
edge it or not.
A poet said. "There is a destiny
that makes men brothers. No one
goest his way alone."
We are fully aware that the
wedges of hatred, pride, racism,
greed, and all the social ills of our
day are constantly dividing us as a
human race, but it is up to us to
make the difference and care
enough to put out signs: "People
Lost...Well Loved....Reward for
Return."
And that's the way I see it!
