Tamara Chance has been an
excellent student at St Gerard
I'amara L. Chance is one of 58
students who will graduate from St.
Gerard High School this Spring. The
daughter ofWalter Jackson andRuhy
American female in the graduating
class of 1993.
She plans to attend Incarnate Word
College to earn a B. S. degree in
nursing after which her plans are to
enter Wesleyan University’s
Graduate School of Nursing to pursue
a degree in Nursing Anesthesia.
The 1993 First Ducchess at St.
Gerard’s Senior Prom, she has been
very active at St. Gerard.
She was a member of the Math
Club, president of the Science Club,
Student Council representative.
Student Council treasurer, a member
of the newspaper staff, and an office
aide.
She was selected for All-American
Scholar and appears in die United
States Achievement Academy
National Awards for National 1 lonor
Roll of 1992. She has also
participated in the Army Reserves.
Tamara is the granddaughter of the

Historically Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCU’s)
Players are challenged with a wide
range of topics, including African-
American history, culture, and
achievements.
Prairie View was selected from 64
teams that began with the competition
in the fall.
They will compete for a total of
$305,000 in monetary grants,
receiving $2,500 for qualifying for
the Sectionals, which they won, and
a minimum of $5,000 for advancing
to the Nationals. The National
Champion will take home $50,000.
American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
has produced and sponsored the
competition since 1989, donating
nearly $1 million in grants to
HBCU’s.
lYairie View, returning to the
National Championships after a year
out, is the only Texas School in the
C hampionships. Texas Southern was
selected, but has had to drop out.
Another San Antonian, Phyllis
Yearwood, a junior majoring in
Urban Studies, will play on the
University of the District of
Columbia team.
Also represented on the lYairie
View Team are William Franklin
(captain), Junior in I Economics from
Oklahoma City, Ok; Chancellor
Archie, a senior in Electrical
Engineering from Houston; Miles
Brooks, a senior in Political Science
from Brentwood, IN; and Trent
' Terrell, a freshman in Marketing from
Gulfport, MS.
