' We're in the free world" one teen-
ager shouted as she stepped out the
doors and back into the bright morn-
ing sunlight.
She and the others learned their
lesson following the first stage of a
day long field trip to the detention
center, the Bexar County Justice
Center, and Kelly Air Force Base.
The trip is part of what San Antonio
School District 1 mstee Tom Gaffney
terms his "scared straight" program
to keep youth in school and <>ui of
trouble. This particular fie 1^1 trip was
in cooperation with the Down Town
Drop In Center and University Out-
reach.
Corp. MacCully of the Bexar
County Sheriffs office was pleased
with the girl's zeal for her personal
freedom. Throughout the jail house
tour McCully urged the group of 7 to
17 years old to guard their freedom,
and to avoid any activity which may
lead them out of the "free world."
The inmates' term for life outside of
jail."
The "scared straight" field trips are
"an attempt to pull kinds from gangs
and show them the positive side of
life," Gaffney said. Many of the
youngsters are Ala/an Apache Court
residents who attend J. T.
Brackenridge Elementary, Irvin,
Tafolla and Truman Middle Schools;
and Lanier High School.
Well, here I go
again...
by Lassie Caraway
As we look at the news and see all the
things that are happening now, that
should let us know that time is
running out. At time speeds on, we
must know that we are not to fight
our own battle. It’s hard to see that
you are being set aside for nothing,
but the main thing is to hold on to the
hands of the Lord. He may not come
when you want Him, but He will be
on time.
Let’s take pride in our community.
I know how you feel when you know
you are right, and you are denied
your right, but we must leave those
kind of deals in the hands of the
Lord. He will work everything out.
I brought out a beautiful type of
hair weaving lh 1958; it Is called
Enteflock:‘'A<petiplg watched me,
they decided I was just braiding, but
braiding is not Enterlock at all. I was
really talked about.
Some said braiding is not weaving.
Now that pole weaving is not
popular, Enterlock is in the leading
place. I knew it would happen, but I
just had to wait. With no weaving in
the State Board, we can train hair
weaving on a continuous basis. I
have begged for that privilege for
four years. Just like we begged for
hot work. I almost went to jail
because we were trying to teach hot
work. Black people went to school,
paid the same price for our schooling,
yet we couldn ’ t go into a decent shop
to work. I have been taught patience.
In Seaside, California 1 was taken
to jail for teaching girls to do hot
work. When I got through telling
them how unfair it was to take our
money for a beauty course and not
teach us (as we said then) colored
folks’ hair. 1 was a praying person all
while I was in school. 1 was was the
only Black person in Salinas Beauty
College. Girls used to come up to me
and ask me where I was going to
work when I finish. I would say I
was going to open my own shop.
“let your bucket down where you
are.”
1 have asked for many loans I do
know I have a lots that can help many
young women, but I can’t get a loan
or a grant, but 1 will not let that stop
me.
There is a word from the Lord that
says you will reap what you sow.
Some people think that you will reap
for only the wrong you do, but I’ve
got news for you. You will reap the
good too. I dare you to be nice to
people, treat them like you want to
be treated. God is looking and
booking, and He sees everything you
do. Well, this is it, but be sure you
get the Lord on your side, and as the
Lord blesses you, don’t get excited
and think you are better than
everybody. We are all as filthy rags.

They would laugh.-
I finished in July or August of 1952,
really determined to open my own
business. In September, I opened
my own beauty salon. I was equipped
to do any type of hair.
I worked awhile at that time Martin
Luther King, Jr. was carrying on a
non-violent get together. I can never
forget Stokely Carmichael was also
in leadership for integration but hot
so cool. I remember a young group
came up to Stokely and said,
“Stokely, there is a pool over there
that has never been integrated.’’
He said, “Forget that pool. Get a
pool of your own.” I really agreed
with that. I rented out my small shop!
in Seaside and went to Santa Barbara,
where I went on to own one of the
biggest shops in the city, working
there 18 months. The shop was
called Kay’s Carousel. After 18
months, I returned to Seaside and
bought an all-white beauty salon.
After that I opened the first beauty
supply house in Seaside, and became
one of the top 12 city officials.
All I’m trying to say is get your
mind off the way you are being treated
and start going forward. I am hoping
we will really start cleaning up the
East Side. Show pride in what you
have. As a speaker said years ago.
