Alzheimer’s disease: Recognizing the gymptoms

The early signs of
Alzheimer’s disease are often ig-
nored.
Many times friends and fam-
ily believe these changes in a
loved one are a normal part of ag-
ing Or, gradual changes over
time may go unnoticed.
Knowing the signs of the dis-
ease will help you recognize it in
a relative or friend. While the dis-
ease generally affects persons
osxr the age of 60, it can begin as
early as the 40s or 50s.
According to Dr. Rachelle
Doody of the Alzheimer’s Disease
Research Center at Baylor College
of Medicine in Houston, frequent
forgetfulness is not part of the nor-
mal aging process.
Other early signs of
Alzheimer's include difficulty re-
membering recent information, dis-
orientation, losing track of time,
and repetitiveness.
Along with being confused
over the time of day or the day of
the week, Alzheimer’s patients also
may have trouble keeping on a
schedule, such as taking medication
or eating regularly.
The Alzheimer’s Association
lists these additional symptoms:
• Difficulty performing familiar tasks
• Language problems
• Poor or decreased judgment
• Putting things in the wrong place,
such as the iron in the refrigerator
• Changes in personality, mood or
behavior
• Loss of initiative
• Problems with abstract thinking,
such as forgetting what numbers
are and how to use them
If you notice several of these
signs in a friend or family mem-
ber, take them to a neurologist for
an evaluation.
Although there is no simple
test to diagnose Alzheimer’s, most
major medical centers use a stan-
dardized evaluation process that
has an accuracy rate of up to 93
percent.
Right now, there is no cure.
But, research projects are helping
doctors find better ways to treat the
progressive memory loss and re-
lated problems.
Taking action is the first step
in fighting Alzheimer’s.
