KEEPING THAT HEALTHY
PREGNANT GLOW
By FNdric D. FrigoMlm Je, MD
Elevated hormone levels and other
variety of skin changes. Not all
women experience these changes,
but if you do, here’s what you need
to know.
Hormonally-induced pigmenta-
tion changes sometimes cause
uneven brownish spots to appear
around your eyes, nose or cheeks.
This is known as chloasma, or the
“mask of pregnancy.” In addition, a
dark line may appear from your
naval to your pubic area (the “lines
nigra”), and it is common for the
nipples and surrounding area on
your breasts (the areolas) to darken.
Sun exposure can worsen these
symptoms, and they tend to be more
pronounced with darker complex-
ions. They usually fade or disappear
after pregnancy, when hormone lev-
els return to normal.
“Stretch marks” appear as reddish
streaks running up your abdomen or
breasts. About half of all pregnant
women get them. Although to some
extent they may reflect excessive
tightening of the skin, they are pri-
marily influenced by hormonal
changes. Don’t expect stretch marks
to disappear completely after birth,
but they will fade considerably.
“Spiders” are red spots with fine
lines branching out from them.
IVpkally they appear on the face,
neck, cheat or arms. They, too, are
caused by hormonally-induced
enlargement of blood vessels, and
Many women do reflect a
blood circulation. However, if acne
was a problem at earlier points in
your life, it may recur with pregnan-
cy. Some women find that their skin
is excessively shiny. You will need
to practice good skin care.
Thoroughly remove your make-up
at night, cleanse and moisturize.
Don’t forget your hands, elbows,
knees and ankles, where dry patches
may develop.
Changes in your hair may also
occur during pregnancy. In some
women hair gets thicker, while in
others it becomes thinner. If you
lose large amounts of hair a few
weeks after delivery, don’t panic.
This is not unusual, and your hair
should return soon to its normal
growth cycle.
You can’t control the hormonal
changes of pregnancy, but you can
take good care of your general
health. Be sure to eat property, get
enough rest, exercise and drink
plenty of water. You also may need
to employ “stress busters.” Take an
invigorating walk, swim, meditate
or go to bed early. The difference
will be reflected in your face!

There’s e lot In a
name
by
Mario Marcel Salas
It was so very long ago when S J
Davis Mlthttt School was named
Jeff Davis Middle School 1
remember the SAISD Board
meeting which I attended to
request the name change quite
well. • Former State Rep. Karen
Coqley, Ethyl Minor, Edward
Handyman and a host of interested
citizens joined in with Frontline
2000 to demand that the name of
the school be changed.
Why? Because as everyone
knows Jeff Davis was the leader of
the Confederacy during the Civil
War and was perhaps the most vile
racist in their cause'. Throughout
Texas there are plenty of schools
and streets named after the most
evil racist that ever walked the
earth. In all cases these public
institutions were named when a
more conservative community
surrounded the area in question
Should a public school be named
after someone who haled the race
of the students now in attendance?
I don't think so!
There are other schools that have
not considered the problem For
example, did not Sam Houston
own slaves? What about Crockett
and Bowie? History has been
distorted enough without honoring
men who were against all that was
decent in the treatment of human
beings When people in the
community came together to
change the name of Jeff Davis to
S.J. Davis few were told of the
history of S J Davis and his
presidency of the local branch of
the NAACP One would hope that
something is being do» to guBhlB
to students why the name was
changed in the first place.
What a great change! The
school was named after a defender
of slavery and racism but is now
named after a man who belonged
to an organization, (the NAACP)
that has fought against racism
since 1909. We can only hope that
other schools follow such an
example. 1 had wanted the SAISD
School Board to name the school
after Thurgood Marshall, but that
will be another project I’m sure!

Spurs update the
status of David
and Chuck
San Antonio Spurs Executive
Vice Pres, of Basketball Ops./Gen.
Mgr. Gregg Popovich today,
(October 22nd) made the
following announcement
concerning the status of David
Robinson and Chuck Person.
Both Robinson and Person were
examined at the Kerlan-Jobe
Clinic in Los Angeles on Monday,
October 21st.
“It has been determined that
David Robinson will return to Los
Angeles for about a five day period
to begin rehabilitation of his
back,” said Popovich. “The
current problem does not indicate
that surgery is necessary but we
expect it to be a period of
somewhere between two to four
weeks before David will rejoin the
team.”
“Chuck Person will undergo
surgery on his back on Tuesday,
October 29th,” said Popovich.
“The surgery will take place at the
Kerlan-Jobe Clinic and we
estimate that he will be out
between three and six months.”
