tunities in San Antonio's East
Side
“An area of untold potential” is

Chamber of Commerce East Area
Council describes San Antonio’s
East Side. The Chamber’s East
Area Council is sponsoring an eco-
nomic development “summit” on
Saturday, April 8, 9 a.m. to I p.m.,
at St. Philip’s College to showcase
East Side projects and make busi-
nesses aware of available re-
sources to help them maximize
their opportunities. Admission is
free, but reservations are re-
quested. Call The Chamber’s
Small Business Department at
308-2010 for reservations and in-
formation.
“More than $ I billion is sched
uled for investment in the East
Side over the next two to five
years.” said Gervin-Hawkins, di-
rector of the George Gervin Youth
Center. “Our goal in this summit is
to showcase existing projects and
those on the drawing board,, as
- well as giving businesses infbrma-
tion on available resources. The
bottom line is we want small busi-
ness people to know about the ex-
istence of these projects so they
can benefit from them.
“More than 10 projects will be
highlighted,” said Gervin. “Project
representatives will give an
overview of their ventures, time-
line for completion, cost estimates,
and an outline of opportunities and
incentives available for local busi-
nesses.” Confirmed presenters in-
clude the Alamo Community Col-
lege District Alamo Workforce
Development, Inc., Freeman Coli-
seum, Friedrich Lofts, George
Gervin Youth Center, San Antonio
Spurs, VIA Metropolitah Transit
and the Wheatley. Courts Master
Plan.
Gervin said the summit will
highlight investment possibilities,
leasing incentives and sub-con-
tracting possibilities. Representa-
tives from The' Chamber, the
City’s First Point Business Devel-
opment Foundation, the San Anto-
nio Economic Development Foun-

St. Philip’s College To Host Prairie View A&M University
Sypmphonic Band And Concert Chorale April 9
St. Philip's College and the San
Antonio Prairie View A&M
Alumni Association will host a
special concert performance by the
renowned Prairie View A&M'
University Symphonic Band and
Concert Chorale at 3 p.m on Sun-
day, April 9, in the Watson Fine
Arts Theatre located on the college's
main campus at 1801 Martin Luther
King Dr. The concert, which is free
and open to the public, is being
sponsored by the San Antonio
plines. The groups serve as outreach
arms of Prairie View A&M Uni-
versity, having played before audi-
ences throughout the United States.
The Symphonic Band, directed by
Lucius R. Wyatt, has performed in
cities throughout the state. A major
objective of this ensemble is to
perform music written by the
world’s greatest composers, with a
special emphasis on original music
for the Wind Band.

A friendly game of dominoes turned
violent when two men were shot on
the city's East Side.
Police were called to the 700 block
of Gabriel where they found two
men who were shot in the leg.
Police were told that participants
had several shouting matches and a
man was asked to leave. Police said
the suspect returned to the house
about 15 minutes later with a gun
and shot two of the players.
John Nelson, 42, was charged with
aggravated assault Reports show that
Barron Nelson, 24, and Darnell
Derry, 22, both were treated and
released from University Hospital.

A 29 year old woman, who was
asked to leave the temporary house
where she was residing, was shot
and killed last week.
Serena Smith was living in the 900
block of North Grimes when she
was asked to move out last
Wednesday.
Police were called to the residence
around 7 p.m. Detective Joe Morris
said Smith was across the street from
the home when shots were fired.
Smith was hit once in the upper torso.
Police were looking for a 19 year
youth in connection with the inci-
dent.
Funeral services tor Smith were
held at Sunset Funeral Home.
Smith was bom May 24, 1970 in
Franklin Germany. She graduated
from Roosevelt High School. The
decedent was preceded in death by
her mother Dorothy Smith and
brother LeaVandarin Smith.
She is survived by her children,
Leon Smith, Dontay Smithand Do-
rothy Cochran; her father, Leon
Smith; sisters, Fortuna Green and
Contessa Smith; brothers and Alvin
Smith and Noel Smith.

Funeral services were held March
29, for Stanley R. Randle, Sr. from
Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev.
Jerry Dailey officiating.
Randle was bom February 12,1941
to Julia Haywood and Leslie Lee
Randle
A product of the San Antonio
School district, Randle was a star
football player and he also excelled
in track and basketball at Wheatley
High School. He attended Tennessee
A&I State University where he
starred in football.
Randle became a member of
Macedonia Missionary Baptist
Church and was haptized in 1989
He served his community as a vol-
unteer Pop Warner Football coach
for many years.
Randle married Emarie E. Jackson
in December 1964. To this product
one son. Stanley R Randle Ir and a
daughter Shonda Randle. He was
preceded in death by his parents and
step mother, Beatrice; two brothers,
Joseph and Roosevelt.
