lota Phi Lambda's Gamma Phi chap-
ter recently held its annual Business
Week luncheon and Crazy Hat Show
at Fort Sam Houston Officer's Club.
The luncheon is a scholarship effort
and is held to give recognition k>
African-American achievers in their
respective fields of business.
Honored this year were Rev.
Anderson for Revenue Officer-IRS/
Religion; Geraldine M. Cunningham.
Mortuary Science; Betty Williams,
Public Relations Supervisor for CPS;
Charles C. Andrews, President of
KSJL96.1, Radio and Broadcasting;
and Robert Pinnix, Jr., Entrepreneur.
The chapter honored Rachel Shaw
as Soror of the Year.
The chapter extended thanks for
participating to District 2 Council-
woman Ruth Jones McClendon for
greetings, Ethel Minor, NAACP
president and Gamma Phi member
for greetings; Rev. Trent Christian,
Savannah Baptist Church for the in-
vocation and benediction, and Celeste
Wortes for musical expressions. The
Lambdas and FIGS served as hosts
and hostesses.
Luncheon entertainment was pro-
vided by Gamma Phi members .as
they modeled crazy hats. The Crazy
Hats Production was conceived by
T. Bernice Evans and is recognized
regionally in lota.
First place Crazy Hat winner was
Cecile Ray for her creation of Seam-
stress Necessities. Happy Kwanza

creation called "Jurrassic Park."
Other hat winners were Joshua
Hidalgo, Silly Hat, and designer hats
by Patricia Brown and Marie Weekly.
Iota Phi Lambda extends thanks to
the judges, hat contestants, and guests
for their continued support.
Jean Parker and Betty Williams
were Business Week chairpersons.
Creative and Crazy. Seamstress necessities by Cecile Ray took first place
honors. Rev. D. Fomey accepts the award. Anita O’Neal displays "Happy
Kwanza", the second place winner, and Vergil Parker display Jurrassic Park,
third place winner.
Designer Hats First Place hat is worn proudly by Jean Parker. The design was
submitted by Marie Weekly. Patricia Borwn wears her creation, which won
second place.

This weekend kicks off a weekend
of music, food,and fun—a party from
beginning to end. From the Cajun and
Creole food to the sounds of New
Orleans. To the best of the hottest
R&B, rock, pop, and hip hop, country,
and Tejano petforming on the stages
at Le Semana Alegre, it'4 going to be
all that and more.
During the week, there will also be a
couple of parades, a Night in Old San
Antonio (NIOSA). and whatever else
you can dream of, it's Fiesta! The
annual event is one of the largest ever
to happen in the city.
Le Semana Alegre, the annual event
put on by the San Antonio Jaycees,
despite differences between some lo-
cal ministers and officials associated
with the evenL the show will go on as
planned. Some adjustments are being
made in an attempt to reduce the noise
level in the resident area of the Coli-
seum. There will be two stages as
usual, one inside and one outside.
Hopefully, this will be a quick fix to
the problem which threatens the very
existence of the major evenL
The entertainment line-up includes
some of the top names in show busi-
ness. Mary J. Blige, the queen of hip
hop will perform on the outdoor stage
Monday. April 24. Tommy Boy artist
K-7 will also perform on the same
night Thursday night, it's the sounds
Mary J. Blige
of R&B trio, Immature. This young
group has taken the industry by storm
and has received wide recognition on
being positive role models in the en-
tertainment industry. Crystal Waters
will be among the guest artists that
night as well as4PM and Rappin'Tay.
The San Antonio Zulu Association
celebrates their tenth anniversary of
"A Taste of New Orleans" this week-
end. The two day fiesta of Cajun and
Creole food spiced up with that real
New Orleans sound will take place
Saturday and Sunday at the Sunken
Gardens Theatre in Brackenridge Park.
The gates open at 12 noon each day.
The music line-up includes The
Original Pin Stripe Brass Band from
New Orleans, Michael Ward and the
Buffalo Soldiers, Fingerprints, Rich-
ard Garcia and First LighL Little Willie
and the Zydeco Hitchikers, and more.
A Taste of New .Orleans is a family
affair. Admission is $5 for adults,
children under 12 are admitted free.
