Lack of Experience
Rattlers’ Trouble
During A & I Defeat
By CHAD HUNTLEY
The Rattler basketball squad
should face a rough test in their
homecoming game when they
meet the Tigers of Texas South-
ern U at 8 pm Saturday in Alum-
ni Gym.
The Rattlers will aim to profit
from mistakes made in the 95-60
loss to Texas A&I Wednesday
night.
Playing their first game of the
season Wednesday, the Rattlers
were tight and jittery. As a re-
sult, the team showed sub-par
shooting, passing, ball-handling,
rebounding and leaky defense.
Javelina coach Ted Carley’s
“Drake shuffle” offense seemed
to confuse the Rattler defense as
the Javs broke across or down the
foul lane repeatedly for lay-ups.
So effective was it that they
needed take only five shots from
outside of 15 feet during the
game.
With the exception of a fine
fast break, the Rattlers fared
better individually than as a
team. Buddy Meyer showed lead-
ership and an ability to draw
fouls. He managed to score 18
points though being guarded by,
in his words, “the toughest de-
fensive man I’ve ever played
against.”
Cox and Christy showed good
tipping form; Casanova played
tight defense; Michel used his
weight to advantage under the
boards; and Tatsch kept a cool
head.

RUNAWAY RACE?
By winning the football championship, the Barons are
now one step closer to regaining the All-Sports Trophy
now held by the defending all-intramural champs, Rho
Beta Gamma.
Now that the advent of the Intramural basketball
season is rapidly approaching, Rho Beta is confident that
they can close this gap. The high-scoring Rho Beta five
is still smarting from last year’s title game loss to the
Satellites and they hunger for revenge. But this year the
Satellites are no longer. It looks like a clear path to the
title.
But hold on! The Barons have pulled another trick
from among the many in their black top hat. It’s a cute
little compound that won the league championship last
year—The Satellites!
Last year the Barons finished 4th in basketball com-
petition, losing the championship consolation game to Tau
Delta Sigma. Earl Hayes, the team’s leading rebounder
and all-intramural center, along with Bob Schleinat, a
steady performer at guard, are back from last year’s
squad. They will be hurting from the loss of their star
performer, but only for a brief spell. Bob Dwyer, who
could play first string on anybody’s team, will return to
action come second semester.
Last year the Barons were hurting for another strong
rebounder to help big “0” Hayes control the boards. They
seem to have found a gem in Mike Lane whose merit is
displayed by the fact that he played freshman ball for St.
Louis U last year. Hap Burnette, a scrappy little guard,
is another new face that should break into the starting
five.
Welcome additions from the Satellites are Danny
Matocha and Dave Burton. ‘‘Red Dog” and the “Owl”
should prove to be a deadly duo amidst the Baron scor-
ing punch. Mick Denning, who’s clutch shooting and re-
bounding led the Sats to victory after victory, promises
to continue where he left off last year.
Last year Rho Beta Gamma had the highest scoring
team in the league plus the league’s top scorer and three
all-intramural performers. This year, believe it or not,
they’ve improved to the tune of five all-intramural play-
ers and the league’s three top scorers.
“Lilly” Seimer, the league’s leading scorer for the
past two years, will lead the scoring brigade backed up
by Bobby Lara, a guard of varsity caliber, and Frank
Mendiola, probably the best all-around performer in the
league. Rounding out last year’s starting five are Leroy
Ihrer, who starred as an all-intramural center last year,
and the hustling Eddie Mora, the team’s play-maker.
The recruiting hand of the Blue and Gold has not
been dormant either. It has reached down and grabbed
three starters from last year’s G.D.I.’s famed “Four Men
and a Dunph” team. Mickey Morgan, the league’s second
leading scorer, is a deadly marksman from his guard
spot. There’s the Great Marcellus (R.J-K.) who, by *the
mere presence of a basketball in his hands, is immediately
transformed into a human pop-gun. Art Galvan, an ex-Tau
Delta net-burner, is another welcome addition.
They also have a find in Tom Robinson, who along
with Bill Michel, will coach the Rho Beta five.
Sigma Beta Chi must come uf> with some horses to
assist the likes of Phil Otto, Rich Dieterle and Art Abegg
who pulls in rebounds like fly-paper does flies. If their
incredible revamping program, that produced a bread-
winner in football, can still hold true, then look out!
They’ll be right in the thick of things.
The height conscious Tau Delta Sigma five finish-
ed third list year. They have two all-intramural perfor-
mers back and have sufficient depth. Any team that can
control the boards like they have in the past will always
be a winner.
At this time, the above four are the teams to beat.
Of course recruiting is still going on and a darkhorse
candidate may emerge from the depth and take all. Who
knows? The Rattlers and the Sems showed what hustle
and determination could produce through their surpris-
ing upsets during the football season. Only time will tell,
though, and time begins running out in the Alumni Gym
on the 10th of December.

Intramural Bowling Sees Changes
Several changes in the intra-
mural bowling league have re-
sulted in increased interest and
activity on Sunday evenings by
St. Mary’s bowlers:
ONE—League action was
moved from Woodlawn to the
modern Bowlerland on Bandera
road.
TWO—A team was added to
the league — Society for the
Advancement of Management
(SAM).
THREE—The league is now
sanctioned by the American
Bowling Congress (ABC).
FOUR—League play has been
extended to 25 weeks.
FIVE — Team averages are
higher than ever before.
Team Standings
The Rattler Club is in first
place, maintaining this position
for seven of the first eight weeks.
SAM is in second place after
capitalizing on two bad weeks by
third place Rho Beta.
The Barons, off to a bad start,
are now in fourth place. Last
year’s winners, Sigma Beta, are
in fifth place and Delta Sigma
is in the cellar. Tau Delta is
no longer in the league.

Talent vs. Teamwork
In Grid All-Star Game
It will be a case of prodigous
talent vs. precise teamwork, with
a 55-game winning streak at
stake, when the cream of the
intramural football league meets
the Order of the Barons in the
annual All-Star game, 2 pm Sun-
day.
The outcome of the game is
anyone’s guess. Although the
Barons went through this season
unbeaten, they by no means ran
away with the league as in years
past. The other teams had too
much talent—the same talent the
Barons contended with a sixth at
a time during the season but will
have to play en masse Sunday.
But don’t sell the Barons short.
Talent isn’t everything as the
other teams in the league by now

kept the Barons on top, even
when they were out-talented, is
teamwork and precision. This
formula has spelled success in
the past and may well be the
key to an addition to their win-
ning streak Sunday.
