New York September IS A dispatch to
tho Herald from Panama sajs Accord-
ing to adlces Just received by way of San
Salvador tho city of qucealtenango In
Guatomala has been captured by tho
rebels
For twentyfour hours tho garrison there
hold tho city but the rebel forces were
so much greater that they were forced to
surrender
Immediately following tho surrender the
main body of tho garrison Joined tho In-
surgent ranks thereby adding to tho
strength of Prospcro Morales movement
against President Barrios Tho rebels are
now moving on Champerlco and thero
will probably bo hard fighting there as tbo
placo Is garrisoned with strong forces
Tho government also holds tho towns of
Kotalhu and San Fcllpo despite rebel at-
tacks there
Tho loss of Quesaltenango Is a great
blow to tho government nnd gives Morales
undisputed control of that portion of
Guatomala It marks too It Is believed
tho beginning of the end of President Bar
ries supremacy There seems little doubt
that a new government will bo estab-

At tho foot ot tho sunmlt wo met pcr
Iihps 100 Indians and whlto packors who
had rallied their packs an tho trail abovo

augmented by tho rainfall rush ncror > i tho

ten coining ta tho knees Add to this
a gulo blowing fifty miles an hour Bitot
and snow rushing horizontally through tho
air and tbo temperature nt JO degrees and
you will have a faint Idea ot tho horrors
ot my nasaaga across tbo summit After
struggling up a steep ascent of twenty
mo or thirty feet I would bo fo rcid from
sheer exhaustion o rest lor a moment but
would scarcely stop before thn chilling
wind would cut mo o tho marrow and I
would luivo to contlnuo my course lo keep
from chilling to death
Ucfoni I reached tho summit I was wot
to tho nkln and my boots wcro full of Wa-
ter anil tho lidded weight ot tho water
mado it almost Impossible to proceed I
finally reached the camp at tha head ot
Lako Llndcman about 7 oclock In tho
evening having been cloven hours In cov
ering lw < Ivo miles so thoroughly ex-
hausted that I could scarcely drag ono foot
after tho other I bad a latter from m

and made as comfortable as possible la

As ray Indians had not arrived I hail
no cbiingo of underclothing and wua
forced to accept Ills offer of a suit ot warm
underclothing and theso supplemented by
a half tcacupful ot brandy brought tho
warmth back to my body I remained all
day In bed yesterday too thoroughly worn
out to move I had nomr symptom of
pneumonia but with tho exception ot
some soreness am feeling fairly vvolt this
morning This climate Is very treacherous
changes being very sudden
At present tho condition of affairs on
both trails lateniblo and hundreds ot men
aro bound to starva and frcezo to death
If they contlnuo to come tbls war t
passed nt least a thousand men between
Dyra and here and not moro than 100
havo got tbolr outfits thin sldo ot tho sum
rnlt Kvcry fifty yards along the trail ar
piles of goods and I supposn thero are
provisions to tho value of MO000 scattered
along the trail
Wages ot carponters are 12SQ a day and
board Everything Is Mgh In price when
you can get It at all Whisky Is 0 cent
a drink and 55 a bottle and poor stuff at
that
A packer hon just arrived from Sheep
Camp who says ho passed my outfit on tha
road and that lt will probably reach bora
tonight tbo weather having Improved oat
the divide As I havo an opportunity to
send mall by him I closo this letter with
tho explanation that It has been written
under great mental stress and physical
suffering
Some movement ought to be made a
once for tbo relief of tho suffering which
Is bound to occur at Dyea and Skagaway
Every steamship that hart brought peopla
will have all It oau do for at leasttwo
trips n carrying tho unsuccessful people
back to civilization and thero ought to ba V
some way for them topertorm the gervleaja
