Heritage Association is of-
fering two sets of awards to
students for the best papers
written on the county’s
history.
According to T.C. Roddy
Jr., one set of awards will
be presented middle school
students and a second set to
high school students.
Deadline for receiving
the essays is April 15.
It was suggested to
students that elderly
people be interviewed for
their memories and ex-
periences. Histories of
towns in the county, both
those “gone with the wind”
and active communities,
were also suggested.

Service Unit Meeting
The kickoff meeting for
the Rusk and Alto
Salvation Army Service
Unit fund drives will be
held this week.
The money raised In
these campaigns will be
used to support the work of
the Salvation Army in
Texas and to help those in
need in the Rusk and Alto
communities.
The committee, com-
posed of business and civic
leaders, carries out a year
round program of aid to
people with emergency
needs. Acting on behalf of
The Salvation Army, the
committee arranges for
food, lodging, utilities or
other basic necessities that
a family or an individual
might require in a crisis
situation.
The Service Unit com-
mittee also acts as liaison
with The Salvation Army’s
statewide programs. Some
of these services are:
summer outings for boys at
the Army’s Camp Hoblit-
zelle near Dallas; help for
V.O. Kimbrell
Funeral services for
Vernon Odell Kimbrell, 46,
of the Tecula community
near Jacksonville, were
held at 2 p m. Friday in the
Thompson Funeral Home
in Jacksonville with the
Rev. Benny Walker of-
ficiating.

emergency relief in time of
natural disaster.
Members of the commit-
tee are: Charles Hassell,
Donald Copeland, Nancy
McKean, Irwin Conley of
Rusk; and James Gram-
mar and Bobby Sowell of
Alto.
Burial was in Resthaven
Memorial Park.
Mr. Kimbrell died Wed-
nesday morning after an
automobile-train accident
near Jacksonville.
He was born April 29,
1934, in Alto, and lived in
Jacksonville seven years.
He was construction
superintendent for Traylor
and Sons. He served in the
U.S. Marines 11 years and
was a member of Taylor’s
Chapel Assembly of God
Church.
Survivors include his
wife, Mrs. Ann Kimbrell of
Tecula; two sons, Dwayne
Kimbrell and Larry Kim-
[ brell, both of Tecula; his
. mother, Mrs. Elsie Kirn-
l brell of Dallas; his brother,
l Herbert Kimbrell of Rusk;
y five sisters, Mrs. Ima Jean
y Robinson, Mrs. Jeanette
y Kennedy and Mrs. Reta
► Mae Wiggins, all of Rusk;
Mrs. Jewell Spence and
Mrs. Elsie Nell Nyers, both
of Dallas; and several
nieces and nephews.
