Remind us that freedom is not
doing as we like but doing as we
might.
My personal thanks to all those
who have contributed to the
Jenkins Fund and the Christmas
Needy Family Fund. That is the
true spirit of Christmas.
From the mouths of 10-year-
olds - “What’s wrong with
grown-ups.”
—Grown-ups make promises
and forget them, or say it was not
really a promise, just a “we’ll
see.”
—Grown-ups do not do the
things they are always telling
children to do, like picking up
their things or speaking correctly
or always telling the truth.
—Whenever ou ask “Why?”
grown-ups always say dumb
things like “Because I said so” or
“1 will explain later” or “I do
not need a reason.”
—Grown-ups never listen to
what children say and think they
always have the right answer.
—I am always being told not to
interrupt people, but grown-ups
interrupt children all the time.
—1 must say “Excuse me”
whenever I burp, but when
grown-ups burp they think it’s
funny and never say anything.
“Grown-ups never admit when
they are wrong, even if they know
they are.
—Grown-ups talk about
motley all the time. They say
money is not important, but the
way they talk about it, it must be.
—Kids are not supposed to say
mean things about each other,
but grown-ups sit around and
talk about each other that way all
the time.
—Grown-ups pry into
children’s secrets.
—Grown-ups are always trying
to prove something. They argue
for a long time about the
dumbest things.
-Grown-ups always talk
about that they did and what they
knew when they were our age,
but they never think about what
it is like to be our age now.
—Grown-ups almost never like
to get silly. And when we have
fun and get silly they always say
“settle down.” When they do get
silly, it is the most fun we have.
—Grown-ups always tell you
to eat only certain things, like
vegetables and milk, but they eat
whatever they want. They tell us
not to waste food but they throw
away food all the time.
—Grown-ups always tell us to
be good sports and playing the
game is most important but when
we go to sports things with them
they always boo the other players
and officials.
—Sometimes grown-ups act
like kids are invisible and talk
about us like we are not there.
—Grown-ups worry a lot
about everything.
I hope that when I grow up I’ll
remember what it was like being a
kid.
Now, as for me, I hope 1 never
grow up if it means to become
sour and disgusted with the world
like some “old” foggies I know.
Maybe we should start listen-
ing and paying more attention to
“kids.” Who knows? We might
just learn something....like love,
compassion, enthusiasm, etc.
We might even learn how to
hug and do so without expecting
something in return.
Weather
Cloudy with a slight chance of showers. Highs in the mid to up-
per 80s and lows in the upper 50s and 60s. Clearing the first of

Letters to
the Editor
Dear Mr. Rea:
During the month of February,
the citizens of Texas will have the
opportunity to voice their con-
cerns about the future of surface
transportation in Texas and the
nation.
The State Department of
Highways and Public Transpor-
tation, with the cooperation of
the Texas Good Roads/
Transportation Association and
the Texas Highway Users Con-
ference, is sponsoring six forums
across the state in February.
As the department’s represen-
tative in this area, I would like to
invite all persons concerned with
the future of surface transporta-
tion to participate in a forum.
Forums closest to our area are
San Antonio, February 2, 1988,
at the La Mansion del Norte;
Houston, February 4, 1988, at
the Holiday Inn-Greenway Plaza;
and Austin, February 25, 1988, at
the DeWitt C. Greer Highway
Building, 11th and Brazos.
The American Association of
State Highway Officials and
more than 100 cooperating
groups nationwide initiated this
long-range planning effort called
‘‘Transportation 2020.” The pro-
gram begins with forums held in
every state to give citizens the op-
portunity to voice ideas, sugges-
tions and concerns in a setting
where they will be heard by
lawmakers at both the federal
and state levels.
The Texas forums provide a
unique, occasion to be a part of a
nationwide grassroots planning
effort. We encourage all to par-
ticipate. We will be happy to send
you details about how to make
your voice heard, even if you can-
not attend a forum. For further
information call Pearlie Bushong
at (512) 293-3512.
Sincerely,
L. J. Vincik
District Engineer
Two other hordes on tour will
be those of: Ruth and N. A.
Steen, at the intersection of
highways 87 and 72, a forty year
old home N. A. built from
timbers of his family ranch
home. Steen collects many
things, among them barbed wire.
His collections will be combined
with Christmas decorations;
Lecia and Gil Becker, owners of
the Reiffert-Mugge Inn, corner
of Indianola and Prairie Streets,
a Victorian structure moved from
Indianola in the late nineteenth
century. Decorations will be
centered around a Victorian
theme.
Chairmen and hosts and
hostesses will be announced in a
later article.
Proceeds will benefit the Cuero
Chamber of Commerce and
Agriculture.
Fund grows
to aid needy
With about three weeks to go
the Christmas Needy Family
Fund continues to grow but at a
slower pace than last year, accor-
ding to Cuero Record General
Manager Homer Berner. The
newspaper is sponsor of the
Christmas project for the fourth
consecutive year.
The donations to date total
$490.00, Berner noted. “This is
about two hundred dollars short
of where we were at this time last
year,” he said.
The money will be used to aid
deserving families in the Cuero
area to have a merrier Christmas
than they would normally have.
Contributions can be made at
the newspaper office, PO Box
351, Cuero, 77954 or to Farmers
State Bank & Trust Company or
Buchel Bank & Trust Company.
Berner said Monday that if the
names of needy families are not
received by letter at the Record
the money will be turned over to
the Cuero Area Ministerial
Alliance for distribution as
emergency funds.
If you know of a needy and
deserving family who has little to
look forward to this Christmas,
please write down the necessary
information and mail it to the
newspaper.
Include the name of the family,
the circumstances of the family,
and names and ages of the
children. All information will re-
main confidential.
Ranch youth
need donations
Donations are needed for
youngsters at Bluebonnet Youth
Ranch this Christmas.
According to Mary Ann
Kenne, funds are needed to allow
the youngsters to do their
Christmas shopping.
She said those making dona-
tions may specify on their checks
that it is for the youth’s
Christmas shopping and all dona-
tions are tax deductible.
For more information contact
her at KQRO, 275-3430 or
275-8009.
