Kayla Nunemaker, daughter of Shane and Holly Nunemaker,
attended the 2000 National and World Baton Twirling
Championships. Miss Nunemaker placed 8th in the flag baton
event, and in the top 20 of one baton, 2 baton and strutt. Kayla
competed against girls from each of the 50 states, the 5 U.S.
regions, Canada and England.
She qualified for this competition by winning her solo baton at the
Texas State Competition. Also attending the contest at Notre Dame
University; South Bend, Indiana; was her coach Brenda Lehmberg.
Kayla is a member of the Texas Wildflower Twirling team from
Harper.

Beaudoin Receives The Fasken
Foundation Scholarship
Jacob Michael Beaudoin, a graduate of Harper High School, has
been awarded a scholarship by the Texas Interscholastic League
Foundation.
Beaudoin received The Fasken Foundation Scholarship in the
amount of $1,000, payable $500 each semester of the first year.
This year the Fasken Foundation awarded a total of four grants to
students who have participated in the University Interscholastic
League Academic State Meet and who have compiled an
outstanding record of academic and extracurricular achievement.

Gillespie County Fair
Race Meet
Pari-mutuel horse racing with the added bonus of simulcasting
returns to the Gillespie County Fair Grounds in Fredericksburg on
Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13.
Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association,
the two-day Gillespie County Race Meet on Saturday and Sunday
will again feature some of the state's finest quarter horses and
thoroughbreds running at the five-eighths mile oval.
Simulcast wagering from horse and dog tracks in Texas, Louisiana
and California will be offered in the biergarten Friday through
Sunday, Aug. 11-13.
Gates open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and post time is 1
p.m. for the live races from the Class III facility.
Prior to the two-day race meet, simulcasting only will be offered on
Friday night in the biergarten. Friday night has been dubbed "Dollar
Night" when both the beer and programs will cost $1 each, and there
is no admission charge to the grounds.
On Friday, wagering from Retama Park (San Antonio) begins at

Beaudoin competed in Computer Science at the 1999 and 2000
UIL Academic State Meet, where he placed third in 1999. He also
participated in UIL Calculator Applications, Mathematics, Track, and
Football throughout his high school career. He was involved in
National Honor Society, Student Council, and was Senior Class
Vice-President. He was active in the community through
Adopt-a-Highway, and food drives.
Beaudoin plans to attend Texas A&M University-College Stateion
and major in Computer Engineering.
Harper Student Receives DEKALB
Agriculture Accomplishment Award
Cameron Grona receives DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment
Award. Cameron Grona of Harper and the Harper FFA Chapter has
recently been selected as a recipient of the DEKALB Agricultural
Accomplishment Award.
Grona, the son of Boyce & Juanice Grona received the award for
his excellence in academics, leadership and Supervised Agricultural
Experience program (SAE). An SAE is a work-based learning
program where a student applies the concepts learned in the
agricultural classroom, Grona's program consisted of Market Swine.
Ronnie Lumpkins and Doug Townsend are Cameron's agricultural
education instructor and FFA advisor at Harper High School.
Over the past 53 years, thousands of high school seniors have
received the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award which
has become a symbol for excellence and the chapter's highest
honor. Grona received a beautifully cast bronze pin while Harper
High School is given a walnut plaque to display.
In addition to the Agricultural Accomplishment Award, the DEKALB
brand and its parent company, Monsanto, are long-time supporters
of FFA Proficiency Awards. They also participate in the National
FFA Convention Career Show and career development events like
the Agriscience Student Award. Internships and college scholarships
are also available to students pursuing careers in agriculture.

solutions to the growing global needs for food and health by sharing
common forms of science and technology among agriculture,
nutrition and health. The company's employees make and market
high-value agricultural products, pharmaceuticals and food
ingredients.
Christi Greyhound and Gulf Greyhound (LaMarque-Houston) at 7:30
p.m.
Then on Saturday, the simulcasting schedule gets underway with
Corpus Christi, Gulf Greyhound and Louisiana Downs at 1:30 p.m.
followed by Northern California Fairs at 3:15 p.m. Wagering from
Retama begins at 6:45 p.m. followed by Sam Houston at 7 p.m. and
Corpus Christi and Gulf Greyhound at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Corpus Christi, Gulf Greyhound and Louisiana Downs
begin simulcasting at 1:30 p.m., followed by Northern California
Fairs at 3:15 p.m., Sam Houston at 5 p.m., Retama at 5:30 p.m. and
Gulf Greyhound at 7:30 p.m.
Highlighting the live racing program on Saturday, Aug. 12, will be
the running of the 350-yard Gillespie County Fair Association
Maiden Futurity.
Qualifiers for both the GCFA Maiden Classic and the GCFA Madin
Futurity were determined during the Second Annual Fredericksburg
Reunion Weekend Race Meet July 22-23.
Throughout the weekend, plenty of food and drink will be offered.
Admission to the races on Saturday and Sunday is $4 for adults,
$1 for children six to twelve years of age and free for children under
six . Reserved seats are $7 and box seats are $9.
The Gillespie County Race Meet is the third of four scheduled at
the Gillespie County Fair Grounds this summer. Winding up the
season will be two days of racing on Aug. 26-27 as part of the 112th
Gillespie County Fair (Aug. 24-27).
Headlining the entertainment at the "the oldest, continuous county
fair in Texas" will be recording artist Tracy Byrd.
Byrd will be performing on the outdoor dance pavilion on Saturday
night, Aug. 26, at approximately 10:30 p.m. as part of his Mossy
Oaks Brand Camo "Outdoor Obsession Tour".
Advance tickets for the concert are now on sale for $12 each. At
the gate, tickets are $15.
It was noted that advance tickets must be purchased by 6 p.m. on
Friday, Aug. 25.
In addition to the Gillespie County Fair Grounds, advance concert
tickets are also on sale at Knopp and Metzger Department Store in
downtown Fredericksburg and at the Cowboy Store in Kerrville and
Bandera.
