Cooperative met Dec. 8 at the Adult
Learning Center in Lufkin.
The newly renovated facility of
more than 8,000 square feet was a
gift ip I960 to the memory of Ben-
jamin and Jennie Greenberg by The
Fair, Inc.
During the business meeting,
niiiy Watson, director of the
program which serves IX counties,
was high in his praise of the
cooperation given to the program
by the citiiens of Lufkin. “We need
to get more communities, like
Lufkin, involved with independent
school districts, donors, lawyers
and others like these that have
helped here," he said.

Sam Slaydon of Lufkin presided
at the meeting during which time
reports were given: 1983-84 annual
report of the Cooperative; 1983-84
newspaper clippings of the ABE
program; 1983-84 state annual
report for ABE; historical data of
ABE; 1983 GED national statistical
data and 1983-84 statewide
statistical data for ABE.
Bob McMakin, state president of
the Texas Association for Adult and
Continuing Education, reported
plans for working with the
legislature in keeping the members
apprised of the work that is being'
done.
Dr. Charles Pruitt updated the
board on work with migrants who
need to learn English as their
second language.
A slide show was given by Nancy
Loper and Sharon Mefford depic-
ting GED commencement exer-
cises in Tyler last spring.
The cooperative has worked this
year with Kelly Springfield’s
Goodyear Tire Plant in Tyler,
testing more than 1,000 of its per-
sonnel. In a report of this work,
Watson said, “I see our job taking a
new turn. We’ll work more and
more with industry in the future,”
he said.
The work with Kelly Springfield
was the result of plans on the com-
pany's part to institute new
methods in production which called
for an upgraded learning skill on
the part of the employees.
In his report to the board, Watson
said that more than 8,956 people had

Mary Ophelia Pounders
Funeral for Mrs. Mary Ophelia
(Mackie) Pounders, 81, of Alto was
held at 3 p.m. Dec. 18 in O.T. Allen
& Son Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. Ken Babbington of-
ficiating
Burial was in Old Palestine
Cemetery.
Mrs. Pounders died Dec. 16 at her
home after a sudden illness. She
was a lifetime resident of Alto and a
member of Primrose Baptist Chur-
ch.
She is survived by one son,
Claude Pounders Jr. of Alto; one
daughter, Marie Perryman of Alto;
one brother, Curtis Ivie of Weches;
one sister, Vassie Johnson of
Crockett; three grandchildren; and
one great-grandchild.

Moake, O.V. Moake, Arlie B.
Moake, J.E. Ivie, George Robert
James and William Donald James.

In Marines
Marine Sgt. Shaham Joyce, s>on of
Shaham Joyce and Vira L. Poole,
both of Wells, Texas has reenlisted
for six years while serving at
Marine Corps Helicopter Air
Station, Tustin, CA.
A 1979 graduate of Irvine High
School, Tustin, CA., he joined the
Marine Corps in September 1978.
The Elves Get Reedy
The Elves had a big part in the singing and dancing at the PTA
Christmas program last week. Mrs. Glenda Lewis was at the piano
and the kindergarten teachers assisted to make the program a suc-
cess, including Mrs. Delalna Mason and Miss Juanell Rawlinson.

A lot of hard work went into the Alto PTA Christmas program to
make it successful. The elementary gym was packed full and the
children played their parts perfectly to an appreciative audience,
