f
awoke from centuries of shame
and age of oppression and re-
solved to call her virtue back
and conquer time and fate
there above the hills of that
classic land above the roar of
battle and the crash of arms
mingling with the shouts of the
victors and the groans of the
vanquished arose a fierce spirit
of liberty that prompted the
Greeks to fight and die for their
freedom The world saw those
men die for their rights and the
world praised and applauded
them The world saw John
Brown die not for his own free-
dom won but for the sake of
the despised slave And did
the world praise John Brown
His heroic death on behalf of a
downtrodden people roused
from fatal slumber the consci-
ence of a nation thrilled liberty
loving hearts the world over and
he got on this continent a revo-
lution of such greatness as the
world had never seen before
The Revolution proved that but
one flag and that flag the flag oi
freedom could wave over oui
heads for where liberty is
there slavery cannot be where
slavery is there liberty cannot
be
His death was one of those in-
cidents which gave spirit to a
country and emblazon in a single
hour the duties of a nation I
struck the death knell to sec-
tional discord and swept frorr
the face of the earth the crud-
est oppression that ever showec
the contempt of the strong for
the week That gallows killec
not John Brown but slavery
that almost brought our country
to destruction made beasts men
and brought Americans to 2
point where Gods wrath anc
vengeance must surely fall upor
them At John Browns death
for a moment the heart of a na-
tion stood still Murderer cut-
throat assassin traitor were
the best names the people coulc
apply to him A fierce scream
for his blood went up from all
the land Antislavery men made
haste to free themselves from all
complicity with him by declar-
ing themselves against him and
his methods It was at this time
th jt one man dared to step for
d
Jin
and demand a hearing for
Brown A New England
fanatic as usual namely Wen-
dell Phillips and he stood alone
Eureka Laundry We mend your clothes Old phone 565
Ty some he was thought as
crazy as the man he was defend-
ing Men were surprised
3tunned at his fearlessness His
vvbrd were at once from heaven
ind Brown in the eyes of the
North thus became a patriot
and a martyr Phillips spoke
bhe word for which millions were
listening and which became at
last a watchword for a loyal na-
tion He was a strong believer
in the rights of men and be-
lieved that it was not race or
2olor sect or nationality to be
respected but manhood wherev
r it was found The rights of
he poorest and lowliest were to
iim as sacred as the rights of
he highest and mightiest The
iespised slave the wronged Iri
iian were his clients and they
lid not appeal to him in vain
3e had honors and fame before
iim and he gave them all up for
1 downtrodden race and for it
le was called a fanatic He
vorked to help mankind and he
ised his talents and means with
3ut reserve He poured forth
lis very soul in his eloquence
n behalf of the slave His shin
ng goal was Liberty Justice
Truth He saw our country
prospering her great ships 0
very sea her factories her fi
lances and he saw great
vealth flowing into her coffers
He saw all this glory and opu
ence and he knew that beneath
t all there was evil working
md that evil was strong enough
0 overthrow and crumble al the
worldly power and grandeur
Truth liberty and justice are the
> nly permanent foundations of
jreat governments and these
were not then a part of ours
> Jewish herald Clinto
Phillips recognized this fact
ind saw that ihe flowers fall
ihoked by the flourishing weeds
3e believed the only way to
save our nation was to shatter
bhe evils that were gnawing at
ler vitals to shatter slavery and
out truth and justice in the
heart of our government and
bind together by brotherly
ove and liberty
