RAMBLING
with RILEY
’Twas “Pie” Sanders, bantam-sized scat back and flashy
Pete Pfluger, line backer extra ordinary, who stole the show
in the Bulldog-S.W.T.T.C. scrimmage Saturday. Although old
man Jupiter Pluvius ended matters in the early stages of the
third stanza, each of these Bulldog standouts served warning
that they will be in the thick of things come the first Bulldog
encounter.

The Kieffer-Reynolds 1940 edition of the Black and Gold, al-
though suffering a thirteen-nothing setback, in Saturday’s scrimmage,
looked very well, considering the fact that they happened to be
tussling with the “B” squad of the most outstanding eleven that
the Bobcats have had the pleasure or displaying on Evans Field in
at least several decades. In fact, several players intermingled with
the “B” squad have seen quite a bit of varsity play; for instance
may I point out Ted Haese, Lavernia comet, who the scribes have
consistently ballyhooed to be the sparkplug of this year’s Bobcat
gridsters.
Lorfing, Berck, Ahrnes, Zunker, Hamilton, Reimer, Bohl, Cur-
rington, and that booter deluxe, the man with the educated toe,
Charlie Ehrhardt, all played topnotch football.

With the curtain ascending on another Bulldog pigskin
season, Saturday, Coach Kieffer’s inexperienced lads in mole-
skins, take to the road, opening the season with Southwestern
University at Georgetown. Even the most optomistic of Bulldog
fans cannot expect a victory over this year’s crack Georgetown
eleven. Experience and weight account for a lot in a tusssle of
this sort, and the Southwestern boys certainly have it on the
Kieffer men in these departments, beside holding a weight
advantage of some twenty pounds or more. Win, lose or draw,
I am sure that gridiron fans will see plenty of action, and that’s
what keeps the turnstiles moving.

Southwest Conference teams get their first test, Saturday,
Texas engaging Colorado, Arkansas taking on Oklahoma Teachers,
S. M. U. tangling with U. C. L. A., Baylor tussling with North Texas
State Teachers, Texas A. & M. grappling with that mighty little
mite, Texas A. & I. and T. C. U. testing Centenary. The Rice Owls,
not fully recovered from last year’s humiliation, are idle until
October 5, when they tangle with Centenary, the only team that
the publicized feathered birds were able to conquer last year. (It
might be added that Sam Houston does not appear on the Owls
calling card this season).
A few predictions:
Texas 26 — Colorado 7.
Arkansas 19 — Oklahoma Teachers 6
S. M. U. 13 — U. C. L. A. 7
Baylor 20 — North Texas 9
Texas A. & M. 20 — Texas A. & I. 6
T. C. U. 13 — Centenary 0.

Lutherans Open With
Georgetown
(By Jimmy Riley)
With three weeks of grueling
practice under their belts, the
Kieffer-Reynolds stalwarts, the
Texas Lutheran College Bulldogs,
take to the road, meeting the
crack lads of Georgetown, the
Southwestern University Pirates,
Saturday, September 28.
Although Coaches Kieffer and
Reynolds have named no definite
starters, the following players will
probably appear in the starting
lineup:
Ends: Webernich, Ganado; Ehr-
hardt, Seguin.
Tackles: Lorfing, Schulenberg;
Reimer, Seguin.
Guards: Luckenback, Fred-
ericksburg; Marinas, Laredo.
Center: Berck of Yorktown or
Borchers of Boerne.
Backs: Gips, Yorktown; Wright,
Bastrop; Zunker, Seguin; and
either Bohl of Devine or Knudson
of Ganado.
Other gridsters that will see
plenty of service in the tilt are
Sanders, Seguin; Currington.
Schulenberg; Fowler, Ganado;
Johnson, Luling; Cummings, Lu-
ling; Hamilton, Cuero; Pfluger,
Pflugerville; Dick Morisse, Nord-
heim; Ahrens, Fredericksburg;
and Red Black, Columbus, Ohio.
Bergner, Fredericksburg meteor-
ite, and Lindenberg, wingman, will
probably not see much service be-
cause of injuries received dur-
last week’s scrimmage.

Bulldogs Lose
Scrimmage To
Bobcats
(By Jimmy Riley)
Coach Kieffer’s band of Texas
Lutheran College Bulldogs bounc-
ed the lid off the 1940 pigskin sea-
son, Saturday, dropping a thirteen
to nothing decision in a scrim-
mage to the strong San Marcos
Bobcats “B” team.
Early in the first period, a cof-
fin corner boot put the Bulldogs
in deep water, the oval shaped pig
hide bouncing out of bounds on
the four yard stripe. Ehrhardt
back to punt out of danger, re-
ceived a bad snap from center
and consequently the boot was
blocked, the Bobcats recovering for
a touchdown and six points. The
try for placement was good, and
the Bobcats held a seven-nothing
advantage.
The rest of the first half saw
the ball change hands numerous
times with neither team holding
much of an advantage, although
the Bulldogs completed four out
of six aerial attempts, the half
ending with the Kieffermen on
the short end of a seven-nothing
count.
Beginning the third star^a, the
Bobcat power game asserted it-
self, the Bobcats marching from
mid-field on a series of power
plays, chalking up four consecu-
tive first downs, and crossing the
pay station for the second time
of the afternoon; the try for extra
point was wide. Score S.W.T.T.C.
13, Bulldogs 0. Here rain came
down in torrents and the game
was called off.
The starters:
Bulldogs: Ahrens, L. E.; Lorfing,
L. T.; Marinas, L. G.; Borchers,
C.; Luckenbacker, R.G.; Ehrhardt
R. E.; Gips, Q. B.; Wright, H. B.;
Zunker, H. B.; Knudson, F. B.
Substitutions: Morisse, • Weber-
nich, Hamilton, Pfluger, Reimer,
Berck, linemen; Bohl, Currington,
Sanders, Johnson, backs.

Eleven
9
Five Seguin youths, all top-
notch at their position appear
-likely to be key men on this
year's starting eleven. “Pie” San-
ders, speedy, midget back, a four-
year high school letterman, may
be the sparkplug of this year’s
eleven. Very speedy and shifty,
and gifted with an oversupply of
intestinal fortitude, he appears to
fill the bill, and you may rest as-
sured that he will see plenty of
service this year.
Ed. Zunker, three year high
school letterman, often heralded
as the greatest all-round athlete
ever to don the colors of Seguin
Hi, will give the Lutherans a con-
stant threat, a lad that can pass,
punt, or carry the mail with the
best of them.
Reimer, a veritable Hercules,
takes up quite a bit of slack in
the line; carrying one hundred
and seventy pounds of bulk; he
plans to spend several afternoons
in enemy backfields this season.
Charlie Ehrhardt, two year high
school letterman, and wingman of
last year’s eleven, may again take
over the booting chores. Fans of
last year well remember Ehrhardt
booming punts, he bids fair to
be even more superb this year.
Last but certainly not least, is
towering Bill Victory, a three year
flash in high school, a standout
on the strong Baylor frosh of last
year. Tipping the Fairbanks at
a mark periously close to the two
Hundred mark, he appears to be
a certain starter. Fast, aggres-
sive, this specimen of physical per-
fection, has strengthened the line
tremendously; he should make a
strong challenge for the lineman
of the year.
