The policy of the officers and directors of The Bogata
National Bank is broad; but no bank is better, stronger
or broader than the men who direct its affairs and man-
age it; so we trust that its breadth and strength have
been such as would elicit the approval of its good in-
tentions, from people at least who do not exact too
mu oh, and it shall be our aim to maintain its well earn-
ed reputation for safety and conseratism. It shall be
our endeavor, too, to give efficient service and courte-
ous treatment to all.
Respectfully,

negro on the side of tiie jail and
four of the white men were said
to be concerned in the plot to kill
him and make their escape. Sher-
iff Jack Martin had gone to Ter-
rell to convey a lunatic. The pris-
oners had been allowed the run-
around during the day, and -the
assault was made wiien Deputy
Allen went in to lock them up for
the night. While he was stooping
over to unlock the box and pull
the lever to o[>en tlie cell lie was
dealt a blow on tlie head with a
stick of firewood, but luckily the
stick struck against a projection,
which broke the force ol it. He
received a severe scalp wound,
however, and was ado I d for an
stain.
After striking him the courage
of the mutinous prisoners weak-
ened and while they hesitated
about following up the attack tlie
otficer made a rush for tlie door
and locked tlie guard room and
culled for help. Deputy Sheriff
Will Lum and City Marshal Per
guson entered jail with him and
they made the prisoners tell
which one had struck him, and
they administered a sound
t trashing to him. It is believed
umt they intended to murder the
officer if necessary to accom-
plish tlmir purpose of escaping
and they admitted the existence
of a plot to escape. The negro on
the side of the jail with tlie white
prisoners wits Henry Ballard,
under death sentanec. All of the
white men exonerated him from
being implicated. They said they
tried to get him to join them, but
that he refused.
The man who struck the 'blow
was in jail on the charge of steal
ing a mule. A complaint was
sworn out against hiui for assault
to murder. CompluiDts will also
be filed against tlie other three,
one of whom was tlie man who
was recently fined 9750 by a jury
