harmony with his ideals: other-
wise be does not.
Can an individual be pure at
heart and rejoice even in hearing
things spoken of which are da-
grading and debasing? If the in-
ner man be tilled with guile and
profanity, it is reasonable and
logical to conclude that it will be
made known in actions and con-
versation. "It is impossible for a
fountain to rise higher than its
source ” If our thought* and in-
tentions be holy, pure and uj>-
right our lives will be likewise.
A little girl wrote this com-
position of men;
“Men are what women marry.
They drink, and smoke, and
swear, but don’t go to church.
Perhaps if they wore bonnets
they would. They are more log-
ical than women and also more
zoological. Both men and women
sprung from monkeys, but the
women sprung further than the
men.” _______

"If Texas Is Too Large 'or
Some There is Plenty of
Room in Other States."
Give me Texas and every- inch
of. its matchless and hallowed
soil. Every word written in its
beloved old history. Every her
oic deed that lies within its sac-
red boundaries. Yes, every name
that lias helped to make it the ill
ustrious and historical old Texas
it is today. Every drop of water
that helps to sustain every true
and noble Texan. Yes and every
adopted Texan that ha* the right
spirit of true patriotism flowing
through his veins.
We who know and love Texas
as our own point with pride to its
abounding resources. We say to
that there’s no place on earth
like the beloved old Texas. Can
it be disputed? No.
We look back witli loye and in
terest to the illustrious heroes
who fell tiiat we might live. How
can we, as true sovereigns, turn
our backs upon those who have
gone on before by tearing *sun
der the grandest State in all
those United States just to sat-
isfy the desires and selfish am-
bitions of some two by-four pol-
iticians? I say, nay, verily, and
I believe I shall be voiced by no
few of the heirs of the Texas
Republic—now breathing the
pure and independent air of the
greatest empire known to man.
To try to divide Texas is an in-
sult to the lives of our noble
Travis, Bowie Crockett and be-
loved Sam Houston as well as
many others who gave tlieir'lives
for a State that has no equal.
To divide Texas as lias been
outlined in a bill now pending
before the Legislature would be
as grievous to those who know
and love Texas as it was to the
Greeks when the historical old
Acropolis was rent of its many
beautiful works of art. We re-
call the sad, but beautiful, lines
written by Lord Byron' concern-
ing the removing of a frieze by
Lord Elgin to England:
"Cold is the heart, fair Greece,
that looks on thee.
Nor feels as iovers o’er the dust
they loved;
Dull is the e.ye that will not weep
to see
Thy walls defaced, thy molder
ing shrines removed
By British hands, which it lias
.best behooved
To guard those relics ne’er to be
restored.
Curst be the hour when from
their isle they roved
And once again thy hapless bosom
gored,
And snatched thy shrinking gods
to northern climes abhorr’d!”
It would be snatching from
every patriot in Texs* the history
that belongs to his or tier life. If
Texas is too large for some
there’s plenty of room in States
that are smaller for those who
wish to be governed in a smaller
territory.
Every State in the Union and
Its people love Texas for her
broad expanse and unequated
hospitality as well as the history
that nas made her the "Lone
8tar.”
How many are there worrying
is “too large?
We can almost count them our
i fingers. Why are they worrying?
j It can best be answered by the
acts of those who are trying to
get Texas divided -each one
wanting his name written in the
Hall of Fame
We want Texas a fewer politic-
ians
It is Texas we love and Texas
she will etend.
In behalf of our glorious old
State called„the "lyone Star.’'
