the time table on the Texas and Pacific
inconveniences the people considerably

The receivers of the Texas and Pacific
it is stated have determined not to stop

Receiver Brown will have the entire road

In discussing the effects of the inter

of Denison and the surrounding country
to show the officials of that road that
Denison is bound to be the Queen of

trouble over the right of way of the
teams i Gainesville Henrietta and Western Rail
road in and near the city ol Henrietta is
still raging W B Woraham one of the
heaviest claimants for damages has sued
out a writ of injunction against the
workmen grading the railroad bed to
restrain them from working on his
premises It appears that when an effort
was made to condemn the right of way
over Mr Worshams land he dodged out
of the way so Jhat service could
not be had on him and left
word with Mr W B Stickney
to notify him by telegram if they com-
menced work over his land This was
done and Worsham telegraphed Stick
ney to order them to stop It was then
taken for granted that Stickney was
Worshams agent and he was then served
as such and the land was condemned
allowing Worsham damages in the sum
of 8290 no one appearing in Worshams
behalf after which Worsham sued out
his writ of injunction and also appealed
from the condemnation and upon taking
his appeal work was again com
menced and the workmen were attached for
contempt of court in disobeying the writ
of injunction This called forth many
very intricate points of law the writ hav

the land had been legally condemned A

Special to the Gazette

Felix Johnson a pupil of the South pub-
lic school was walking in the school-
yard his foot struck some object which
exploded knocking him senseless He
was picked up by his schoolmates and
carried home and it was several hours
before he regained consciousness The
young mans statement is that he was
walking through the yard when his foot
struck something that exploded
with a loud hissing sound en-
veloping him in flame and knocking
him down One of his schoolmates
states the flame was as high as young
Johnsons head and upon examination it
was found that the boys hair and eye
brows were singed and his
face chin right ear right hand
and arm were considerably burned
Nothing was left to designate what
caused the explosion and many think it
was a small dynamite bomb or infernal
machine placed there by some mischiev
ous boy The matter will be investigated
by the superintendent

of the Union Various Committees
Appointed and Work Began
Cincinnati Ohio Feb 22 The In-
dustrial Labor Conference called by the
meeting held in Indianapolis last Septem-
ber was to have met in Music Hall today
at noon At that hour the doors were
yet closed and half a hundred delegates
stood on the steps waiting admission
Within the great hall was silent and ten-
antless Placards were placed In the
aisles with the names of the states on
them as guides for tbe seating of the dele-
gates Two United States flags crossed
in front of the speakers desk formed the
sole attempt at decoration Half an hour
later two decoraters appeared with two
long strips of muslin with flag designs
printed on them and proceeded In a
leisurely manner to stretch them across
the stage Before this was accom-
plished the doors were opened and the
delegates to this first convention ot the
new party began to take seats The novel
feature of the delegation is the presence
of ten lady delegates They took seats
not in a bunch but among the men of
their proper states and appeared to be
entirely at home in this new business
Among them are Miss Marlon Todd Bat-
tle Creek Mich Mrs Heath Chicago
and Mrs Dr Severance Milwaukee
While the delesates gathered the com-
mittee on organization was engaged in
choosing a temporary chairman Richard
Trevellick was selected but declined on
account of his connection with the
Knights of Labor as national lecturer
At 105 B S Heath of Chicago chair-
man of the executive committee
called the convention to order At that
time there were about 300 delegates
seated and a very sparse attendance of
spectators Mr Heath said it was cus-
tomary and proper on such occasions as
this to begin by invoking the divine bless
ing

Rev Mr Lockwood of the Baptist
church of this city offered a brief prayer
The Secretary called the roll of states
and received reports of the condi
tion of the representation of the
various states California Louisiana
Maine Nevada South Carolina and Ver-
mont were nt represented Illinois re-
ported sixtyfive delegates present
Mr Heath named Richard Trevel
lick as temporary chairman and he
was elected unanimously Mr Trevellick
was cheered as he lock the stage but
before be assumed the chairmanship
Rev C M Lockwood gave an address of
welcome His mention of Dr McGlynn
was cheered He went on to speak of
the dirtyphysicalmoraland political con-
dition of this city The first could not be
helped and the other two were related
Dirty morals made dirty politics He
predicted for earnest labor advocates of
the needs of the workingmen a respectful
hearing not only by Legislatures but
in editorial offices as well where
mudflinging articles are giving way to
long columns of labor news Speaking
of the aim of the meeting he said it rep-
resented the unrest of the workinmnen
Its chief trouble was with the lobby
which represented the class that bought
legislation Speaking of labor legislation
which he favored he said the riot at
Pittsburg was the result of labor unor-
ganized The peacefvl strike in New
York was the resuit of labor organized
Applause The convention by a rising
vote gave thanks for the minister who
had courage to speak as this minister had
done
President Trevellick in assuming the
chair counselled charity good will and
good business methods He then said he
was in doubt concerning the propriety of
accepting this honor but at the last
moment he felt it his duty to obey the
wishes of the delegetes He wanted to
say he was with them in obedience to
law but not to defy law Committees
were ordered appointed composed of one

tion rules on order of business resolu-
tions and platform The national com-
mittee the original committee of thirteen

SUKGICAL SENSATION
gucccesfnl Location and Unmoral
of a
liraiu Tumor
New York Feb IS The operating
theater of tho New York Hospital was
crowded with doctors and medical stu-
dents on Thursday last They had gath-
ered from all parts of the city and vicin-
ity to witness the notable operation of
trephining for tumor of the brain Prof
Thomas M Markoe of the College of Phy
sicians and Surgeons and who it will be
remembered was one of the surgeons
having charge of the case of the late Gen-
eral Grant was the operator
The patient was a young man named
Thomas Brown tbe history of whose dis-
ease and the operative measures re-
sorted to were of peculiar interest to the
prominent brain and nerve surgeons of
this city Among those present were the
faces so f raiiiar to college men of Pro-
fessors Hammond Weir Bull Stimson
Gibney and others The patient was with-
in six or seven weeks of being thirtyseven
years of age Two years ago be was a
well man and noted for his sharp
bnsiness ability At that time he com-
menced to have very severe headaches
and symptoms of dyspepsia His
business was no longer well attended to
He became cross and irritable in his
family and somnolency soon afterward
followed by sleeplessness took place
These symptoms were soon followed by
epileptic convulsions that becime more
and more fnqnent and of increasing
severity At the time when first
seen by Professor Markoe he was
having as many as twelve fits a night and
was suffering constantly with an agoniz
ing headache At times his speech was
much affected but not at any time was
he out of his reason between the ft acks
Every symptom was carefully ncnerl and
after a consultation with several proml4
nent brain and nerve specialists thjJE
diagnosis was made of tumor of the br lB
situated probably in the fissure betw fn
the convolution that presides orerjhe
function of speech and its anterior neigh
bor
A yXILLFUL OPERATION
The patient was brought Into the oper-
ating roim at S30 oclock in the after-
noon He had previously been put under
the effect of ether and bad had the top of
hla head shaven The operation was com-
menced at once a semicircular incision
Was made midway between the ear
and crown through the scalp and
underlying muscular aphoneurosis
these tissues were laid back revealing
the bony roof ot tbe cranium The bone
was scraped and a trephine an inch in
diameter was slowly worked Into the
skull at s point immediately over the
fissure of Rolando some three inches
down from tbe median line Its sharp
teeth were soon throwing up little bites
oi bone as with a grating sound its work
was performed The skull was rather
thick its external plate being unusually
so while the inner plate was thin com-
paratively When the bone was entirely
cut through an elevator was used to
withdraw the circular piece which done
the opening revealed the dura mater
witoin of an unusually red color It did
not protrude Into the wound nor was any
encephalonic pulsation apparent Evi-
dently something was wrong as both pul-
sation and protrusion are always present
in normal conditions at the wound when
the brain Is trephined From tho way
the dura felt water was suspected
of being beneath or else the
Iookedfor tumor A fine operat-
ing needle was first tried It
withdrew a small amount of ambercol
ored < luid but pulsation was not restored
An incision was now made into the dura
andas this membrane was reflected from
within tbe wound a peculiar arrangement
of red fibrous or rather stringy tissue
was found to lie over and hide the brain
from sight To see this better the cir
cular incision was enlarged with a bone
forceps Then was discovered a round
b < dy somewhat resembling the brain sub
stance but not pulsating entirely em-
bedded in the red fibrous meshwork
What was it A tumor or not What
ought to be done with it
THE TUJIOK REMOVED
Such were the questions that presented
themselves A consultation of the sur-
geons present decided that it must be the
tumor looked for and that it ought to be
removed A larger opening was made in
the bone More ether was given and a
hypodermic injection of morjhine The
removal of the tumor was then com-
menced It adhered in a number of
placss to the brain convolutions and they
were lacerated mere or less in its
removal The growth had forced the
convolutions in all directions and they
presented an odd arrangement This ac-
counted for the severe headaches the
patient had suffered from as well as the
epilepsy After an hour and a half of
work of the nicest kind the growth was
successfully removed it was as large as-
a pullets tgg and wedgeshaped its
point being downward The wound was
washed out with an antiseptic solution
the scalp closed and a cotton compress
applied over all
The patient had on the night before the
operation thirteen convulsions on the
night after he slept well after getting over
the ether and since has not had a return
of the terrible disease from which he suf-
fered so long It is hoped that his recov-
ery is only a matter of time What caused
the tumor it has not been possible to dis-
cover but it is evidently the sole cause
of Mr Browns troubles

Palatka News
On the coldest morning of our late dis-
agreeable spell of weather the fishermen
built a large Are on a point projecting
into the river from East Palatka and
after warming themselves went on with
their fishing and left the Are burning
Returning after a time they were sur-
prised to see a group ot some fifty or
sixty buzzards standing about the fire
kicking up all sorts of antics Not under-
standing such proceedings the boats
were rowed up pretty close and the oc-
cupants watched the birds for sometime
It was a very cold morning and the
birds would standwith one side to the
lire until it was warm and then they
would deliberately turn around and warm
the other side Those on the outside of
the group would get so eager to get
within the warmth of the fire that they
frequently crowded the birds on the inside
nearly Into the flames and tbe struggle
was waged fierce and bitter for advan-
tageous positions
