point. A similar pair of arms is mounted at
the opposite ends, of the frames 11 and 19
and the upper terminals thereof support the
roller 27 which corresponds to the roller 23
5 hereinbefore described. The upper ends of
each of the pivoted arms are provided with
the loops 28, the use of which will appear
as the description proceeds.
A frame 29 is secured intermediate the
10 frame 11 and one of the side walls 3 and a
similar frame 30 is positioned inwardly from
the frame 29. The outer terminal of the
shaft 31 is rotatably mounted in the frames
11 and 30 while the stub shaft 18 is rota-
15 tably mounted in the frames 32 and 29, the
frame 32 corresponding somewhat to the
frame 11. A suitable clutch member 33 is
secured to the outer end of the shaft 31 and
is adapted to cooperate with the clutch mem-
20 ber 34 carried by the inner end of the stub
shaft 18. This shaft is slidable through its
journal bearings and a spring 35 is adapted
to normally urge the shaft inwardly to cause
the clutch members 33 and 34 to engage. In
25 order to disengage the clutch members, the
knob 36 is positioned on the outer side of the
casing.1 and a latch dog 37 is adapted to en-
gage between the inner end of the knob and
the wall 3 to prevent the inward movement
30 of the clutch member 34 toward the clutch
member 33, when the device is being set.
A suitable gear 38 is secured to the shaft
18 and meshes with the gears and pinions of
the gear train designated generally by the
35 numeral 39 which is driven by the worm
gear 40 mounted on the shaft 41. This shaft
41 is driven by a flexible chain or shaft 42
carried within a suitable housing 43 and con-
nected to one of the rear wheels of the ve-
40 hide on which the device is used.
In order to provide a support for the end
of the spools opposite those supported on the
shafts 20 and 31 suitable pins 44. provided
with the heads 45 are slidable through one
45 of the side walls and through the openings
in the frame 19. These pins carry the col-
lars 46 which form abutments for the inner
ends of the coil spring 47 which normally
exert inward pressure on the pins to cause
50 them to enter openings in the spools. The
inner terminal of each of the shafts 20 and
31 carries a disk 48 provided with a central
transversely extending rib 49 formed on the
inner face thereof which is adapted to en-
5-5 gage in the slot in its respective spool where-
by upon rotation of the shaft the spools will
be revolved.
In order to illuminate the device at night
there is provided the reflector 50 provided
"so centrally with a lamp socket 51 in which the
lanip bulb 52 is mounted. A suitable cham-
ber 53 is formed beneath the lamp bulb and
is adapted to retain the flexible cord carry-
ing_ the current to the lamp to allow for the
65 movement of the reflector. Each corner ofthe reflector carries .a hook 54 which is
adapted to engage in the eyes 28 carried by
the arms 21.
It will be apparent from the foregoing
that in use the spools are placed in position 70
on their respective shafts and pins and the
springs 47 will force the pins into engage-
ment with the spools and hold the same in
proper engagement with their respective
disks 48. Upon releasing the pawl 37 and 75
permitting the shaft 18 to move inwardly
under the influence of the spring 35, it will
be seen that the rib on the face of the clutch
member 34 will engage the teeth on the face
of the clutch member 33, thereby causing the 80
shaft 31 to revolve and revolving the empty
spool mounted thereon to cause said spool
to revolve when the.gear train is set in mo-
tion. When it is desired to set the map, it is
evident that the knob 36 is pulled outwardly 85
so that the pawl 37 will hold the shaft 18
back against the tension of the spring 35
and keep the clutch members 33 and 34 sep-
arated. The crank 54 is then rotated, there-
by rotating the shaft 55 and causing the 90
gear 56 to drive the pinion 57 on the -shaft
20, thereby rotating the same and adjusting
the map.
It will be apparent from the foregoing
that a particularly simple and efficient map 95
exhibitor, is provided which is adapted for
use on motor vehicles and will accurately
indicate the direction to be taken and avoid
the possibility of motorists becoming lost
or from straying from the proper road. 100
While in the foregoing there has been
shown and described the preferred embodi-
ment of- this invention, it is to be understood
that such changes may be made in the com-
bination and arrangement of parts as will 105
fall within the spirit and scope of the ap-
pended claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. In an exhibitor, a roller, a reel of paper
mounted on said roller, a second roller, 110
means carried by the second roller to con-
nect one terminal of the paper on the first
named roller thereto, a stub shaft, means for
operatively connecting said stub shaft with
the driving gear-of a vehicle, a clutch face 115
carried by the second roller, a clutch face
carried by the stub shaft for. engagement
with said clutch face of said second roller,
spring means normally holding said clutch
faces together, means to hold said stub shaft 120
in an inoperative position, and a hand crank
operatively connected with said first roller.
2. In an exhibitor, a casing, a roller, a
reel of paper mounted on said roller, a sec-
ond roller, means carried by the second 125
roller to connect one terminal of the paper
with the first named' roller. thereto, a stubshaft having one end protruding exteriorly
of said casing, means' for operatively con-
necting said stub shaft with the driving gear 1302
