the family home at Ashdown,Ark.,
Wednesday morning at 9 o’olock
following a several months illness
Funeral services were arranged

Mrs Ross visited in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Smith at Detroit
a number of times.

as set forth in the following
CITATION:
“For outstanding performance
in combat during the seizure and
occupation in the Japanese-held
Atoil of Tarawa. Gilbert Island?,
November 20 to 24, 1943. Forced
by treacherous coral reefs to dis-
en bark from their landing craft
hundreds of yard off the beach,
the Second Marine Division (Re-
inforced) became a highly vulner
able target for devastating Japan-
e>e hre Dauntlessly advancing in
inspite of rapidly mounting losses,
the Marines fought a gallant bat-
tle against crushing odds, clearing
the limited beachheads of snipers
and macfr'ne guns, reducing pow-
erfully fortified enemy positions
and completely* annihilating the
fanatically determined and strong-
ly cntrench-d Japanese forces. By
the successful occupation of Tar-
awa, the Second Marine Division
(Reinforced) has provided our
forces with highly strategic and
important air and land bases from
which to continue future opera-
ions against the enemy; by the
valliant fighting spirit of these
mm, their heroic fortitude under
punishing fire and their relentless
perserverance in waging this epic
battle in the Central Pacific, they
have upheld th* finest traditions
of the United States Naval Ser-
vice."
