made of mosquito control with a
light-bodied synthetic oil which is
heavier than water. This product,
a-hich is applied in emulsion form,
has been used successfully for con-
trolling pest mosquitoes of the culex
and culicini families The larvae
of these tribes feed on the bottom,
and for unexplained reasons are at-
tracted by the oil, feed upon it, and
soon become poisoned.

Vital Coating Waxes
Deri red From Petrolatum
From petrolatum — itself used in
vaseline, butchers’ wrapping paper,
cosmetics, carbon paper, and as a
waterproofing material for canvas
and rock wool — comes the very
valuable microcrystalline waxes.
These materials, resembling bees-
wax. are used in coating and im-
pregnating electrical parts, and have
great utility as waterproofing paper
coatings, especially when blended
with paraffin wax. Their production
has been expanded enormously for
wartime packaging of countless
metal articles, precision instru-
ments. foodstuffs, field rations, and
small arms amunition.
Microcrystalline waxes are em-
ployed in packing dehydrated and
frozen foods, in making laminated
papers, in lining metal containers to
protect the metal against the cor-
rosive action of the contents, in
high-grade inks to prevent ‘' skin-
nmg.” and are ingredients of carbon
paper, rubber, crayons and a host
of wax compositions.

Slipcovers, in addition to keeping
the upholstery and the wood finish
in good condition, serve additional
purposes. Sometimes they add a
new accent to long-used furnishings.
They may even'‘Substitute for up-
holstery. In winter they may con-
tribute the rich, warm colors that a
gloomy room needs t» radiate a
cozy, friendly welcome. In the sum-
mer, light colored slipcovers change
a room into a cool, restful and in-
viting place to spend hot days. Sim-
ple, cotton, washable covers protect
the upholstery and permit the en-
tire family to enjoy the easy chairs.
Good slipcover material has suffi-
cient weight and enough strong
yarns withstand hard wear;
launders eafll* without shrinking,
sc that it can be used again; and
holds ife color in light and washing.
Potent Dust
DDT—a name derived from
first letters of Dichloro-Diphenyl-Tri-
'hloroethane—is a compound intro-
duced in 1939 by the 189-year-old dye
and chemical house, J R Geigy,
A. G.. of Basle. Switzerland. The
whole story of this potent dust is ro-
mantic and spectacular. ’ It
reached the maiket just in time to
save the Swiss potato crop from the
ravages of a newly-arrived army of
Colorado potato beetles Single-
handed. it stopped in its tracks an
epidemic of the dread typhus In
southern Italy. In the Pacific,
it wiped out local infestations of
malarial mosquitoes DDT, in one
military emergency after another,
has provided invaluable aid.
