. Scouting has traditionally been an
avenue for boys and girls to achieve their
potentials, while at the same time,
directing them towards God. Living out
the Scout laws is both fun and a chal-
lenge.
A Religious Awards Ceremony was
held at the Corpus Christi Cathedral May
16 to honor boy, girl and adult Scouts for
all their efforts in completing required
tasks related to their faith.
Msgr. Thomas L. Meany, V.E., Execu-
tive Director of the Bishop's Office, was
the main celebrant of the liturgy and was
assisted by Father Paul Hesse, Scout
Chaplain for the diocese. Both extended
to the Scout honorees the congratulations
of Archbishop Roberto for their achieve-
ments and also to their parents who
ka helped them along the way.
Msgr. Meany said in his homily he was
happy to present the awards and said that
Pope John Paul II has given international
approval to Scouting. "The Pope has
strongly encouraged the Scout movement
to continue and intensify its service to
Christ," said Msgr. Meany.
In addition to the awards given to the
Scouts present at the liturgy, a special
recognition was given to Matthew
Koenning, who recently died. He had
earned the “Ad Altare Dei” award. His
parents came forward to receive the award
for him and the Mass was offered in his
, memory.

I Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scout-

Lay ministers
commissioned at Mass
The Commissioning and Certification
of Diocesan Lay Ministers was held at the
Corpus Christi Cathedral May 2 and
presided by Archbishop Roberto O.
Gonzalez.
Archbishop Gonzalez told attendants
that ministries are a way to serve the
church “in different forms of witness,
service and living our priestly life in
Christ."
The event was sponsored by the
Pastoral Institute for the Diocese of
Corpus Christi, which is an organization
that prepares Catholics to participate
more fully in the life of the Church. All
diocesan offices were invited to partici-
pate in the preparation of lay ministers for
specific areas of service.
“In Christ we believe we acquire our
true identity and purpose in life. Each one
of us in some way must strive to knock
on the heart of another to bring them
closer to Christ,” the archbishop said.
Certificates were awarded at the mass
to acknowledge those who have com-
pleted the commissioning/certification
process and are willing to renew their
baptismal commitment to bring the
Gospel to their brothers and sisters.
To qualify, candidates must complete
the required courses of study in spiritual-
ity, scripture, and theology through the
Pastoral Institute. Directors of those
