Survey results indicate
positive views of
Catholic Church
By Carlos Huerta
Rebecca Huerta and Robert Bezdek
Catholics in the Corpus Christi Diocese
indicate that they are proud to be Catho-
lic, satisfied with their parish, and believe
that Bishop Roberto Gonzalez is reaching
out to them, according to preliminary’
findings from the Diocesan Self Study.
Almost 99 percent of the respondents
indicated that they are proud to be
Catholics while 97 percent either strongly
agree or agree that the Church is making a
positive difference in their lives. These
findings suggest that area Catholics have a
favorable opinion of their faith.
Furthermore. 92 percent of respon-
dents agreed that Bishop Roberto
Gonzalez reaches out to the average
parishioner. In a related question, 93
percent of respondents agreed that
diocesan leaders were moving the Church
in the right direction. Also, respondents
overwhelmingly believe that the diocese is
well managed (93 percent agree or
strongly agree).
Taken together, the diocese is in good
standing with parishioners. Support levels
are extremely high. Respondents feel
positive about the Church in their own
lives, at the parish level, and with dioc-
esan leaders.
The survey is a component of an
ongoing self study initiated by Bishop
Roberto to plan for the future of the
diocese. The survey was administered at
Masses during July and August of 1998.
The population of the survey is those who
attended Mass and stayed afterwards to
complete the questionnaire on the day it
was administered. Thus the survey is not
designed to be a random, representative
sample of all area Catholics. Sampling
statistics, such as margin of error, are
inappropriate and unnecessary'. The
preliminary results are based on 15,000
questionnaires that have been processed.
Consultants for the survey were Texas
A&rM University- Corpus Christi political
science professors Dr. Robert Bezdek and
Dr. Carlos Huerta.

Pioneering religious dies
Sister Isabel Montemayor, a religious
Missionary of St. Dominic, died Sept. 28,
1998 after a lingering illness. She was
bom Feb. 6, 1912 in Toledo, Spain.
Sister Isabel together with four other
sisters opened the first U.S. Mission of the
congregation in 1950 through the effort
and invitation of the Dominican Fathers
in Alice, Texas and her approval of the
late Corpus Christi Bishop Mariano
Garriga. Her mission in the Diocese of
Corpus Christi was spent entirely in Alice
for more than 40 years at St. Joseph parish
and school. There she was popularly
known as “Madre Isabel" or “Nina” as a
term of endearment to those who were
close to her.
She held various responsibilities in the
religious community as a superior
econome as well as a spiritual guide to
those who came to see her not only in the
convent but also in homes she visited.
Her Golden Jubilee of her religious
profession was celebrated Dec. 7, 1997.
She is preceded in death by her parents,
Juan Montemayor and Irene Mateo and
her three brothers. She is survived by a
niece, Dolores Vaquero Montemayor and
a nephew, Jose Luis Vaquero Montemayor
both of Toledo, Spain.
The funeral was held October 1 at St.
Paul the Apostle Church with interment
services at Seaside Memorial Park.
‘God has been so good to me’
A reflection by Sister Therese
Cunningham, SHSP
For 11 years Faye Hernandez served
Immaculate Conception Parish in
Gregory as secretary with loyalty, love
and great dedication. Prior to that she
wonderful years. Sister, I have done more
and enjoyed more with less over the past 10
years than most people do in a life-time.
God has been so good to me!"
Faye lived from a grateful heart and she
delighted in singing the praises of God.
worked as a receptionist for the Diocesan She loved music and played her tapes in
Telecommunications Center.
As Director of Religious
Education for Immaculate
Conception Parish, 1 feel
blessed to have had the
opportunity of working
closely with Faye for 11
years. Her warmth, good
humor and insightfulness
endeared her to me and to
our parish stall. Each time I
come to the parish office 1
expect to hear her call out to me,
“Sisterella” a special name she gave me.
One day in May of ‘98, Faye came into
my office to share the following:
“Sisterella, God has given me 10 good
years since my cancer was first discovered
Faye Hernandez
the office while she worked.
One year after 1 had
returned from visiting my
family in Ireland 1 brought
her a tape of “Dana” in which
she sings a song dedicated to
our Lady entitled “Golden
Rose." Faye loved this song
and listened to it many times.
I believe that she now met
the “Golden Rose" herself.
Faye was a joy to know and
fun to work with. May she rest eternally
in Gods light and loving presence.
Hasta la vista, Faye!
(Faye Hernandez died on Aug. 21, 1998,
and is survived by her husband, Alfredo,
one daughter, three sons, 11 grandchildren.
