Salvadoran church requests
canonization of slain archbishop
By Catholic News Service
SAN SALVADOR (CNS) — Church leaders in El
Salvador have launched a formal request to canonize
Salvadoran Arch-
bishop Oscar A,
Romero, who was
shot and killed in
1980ashccelebrated
Mass.
Archbishop Rivera
Damas must conduct
an initial evaluation
of Archbishop
Romero, including
careful study of his
writings and inter-
views with those who
knew him. The pro-
cess usually takes sev-
eral years.
The archbishop would then forward the cause to the
Vatican. Beatification, in which a person is declared
blessed, and canonization, a declaration of sainthood, are
the two main steps in the process toward sainLhood, which
can last decades.
Many Latin Americans already refer to Archbishop
Romero as a martyr, someone who died for his faith.
Rome bombing-work of Mafia?
By John Thavis
Catholic News Service
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope John Paul II de-
nounced a bombing in Rome that investigators suspect was
the work of the Mafia.
The blast May 14 injured 23 people and left dozens of
nearby apartments and cars severely damaged. Police were
looking for two men in connection with the blast —
believed to have been caused by a car loaded with nearly
200 pounds of explosives.
“I express my strongest condemnation of this serious
attack,” the pope said at a Sunday blessing May 16.
“I am praying for the injured and for the families whose
homes were damaged, and I hope that the responsible
behavior of everyone will help stop similar acts of insane
violence," he said.
Archbishop Tutu urges
acceptance of apology
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (CNS) — South Africans
should accept President Frederik W. dc Klerk’s recent
apology for the country’s racist rule, even though it was
“qualified" repentance, said Nobel laureate Archbishop
Desmond Tutu, head of the Anglican Archdiocese of Cape
Town. “I think it would be churlish not to accept his
apology,” Archbishop Tulu said in a column written for a
Cape Town newspaper. At an April 29 meeting in Cape
Town which launched the ruling National Party’s cam-
paign for South Africa’s first non-racial general election,
De Klerk said he “deeply regretted” the misery apartheid
had inflicted on fellow South Africans. He said the Na-
tional Parly wanted to “break from that which was wrong
in its past."
Mother Teresa
hospitalized after fall
ROME (CNS) — Mother Teresa of Calcutta was under
close observation in a Rome hospital after breaking three
ribs in a fall, her doctor said. The 82-ycar-old nun was
experiencing “much pain and naturally much suffering,
but she tolerates it well,” Dr. Vincenzo Bilotta said May
14. Hcexpectcd her to remain in the Salvator Mundi Clinic
lor about lOdays. MotherTeresa slipped and fell May 12
while visiting aconvent in a Rome suburb, he said. She was
admitted to the clinic the nexi morning.
USCC urges tougher
standards for children's tv
WASHINGTON (CNS) — The U.S. Catholic Confer-
ence has asked the Federal Communications Commission
to “send a clear message" to broadcasters that they could
lose their broadcast licenses if they do not air more
educational programs for ch ildren. "Several generations of
children have grown into adulthood while broadcasters
failed to act and the commission continued to scold” since
the 1950s, said the USCC, in comments filed May 7 with
the FCC. Under current broadcast practices, the USCC
said, "only those children’s programs which advertisers
can use to target children are broadcast. Selling to children
is the goal. Any educational or social benefit derived from
programming is secondary to the success of the commer-
cial venture,"
Pope to close Eucharistic Congress
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope John Paul II will close
the International Eucharistic Congress, ordain new priests
and meet with government leaders during a June trip to
Spain, the Vatican announced. During the June 12-17 visit,
the pontiff will also follow in the historical footsteps of
Christopher Columbus. He will stop in Huelva, where
Columbus prepared for his voyage to the Americas; in
Mogucr, where the explorer found some of his crew
members; and in Palos de la Frontcra, a now-silled up
harbor from which Columbus set sail in 1492. It will be the
pope’s 59th trip outside Italy and his fourth visit to Spain.
Breakdown in Guatemalan
peace negotiations
MEXICO CITY (CNS) — Guatemalan peace negotia-
tions broke down May 8 over the issues of human rights and
a cease-fire, said the Guatemalan bishop mediating the
talks in Mex ico City. “It was not possible for the two sides
to reach agreement on setting a date, not even a tentative
date, for a possible cease-fire in the armed internal
conflict," Bishop RodolfoQucz.adaTorunoofZacapaand
Santo Cristo de Esquipulas, Guatemala, said in a state-
ment May 9. Tensions were so high during the two-day
meeting that the government and guerrilla representatives
reportedly did noltalk dirccdy to each other, nor were they
able to agree on a date for continued negotiations. But in
his four paragraph statement to reporters, the bishop Pied
to remain optimistic.
Action needed to
alleviate children's suffering
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope John Paul II said
increased suffering by children throughout the world calls
for urgent action by the church and the international
community.
The pope said he wanted to raise a “cry of alarm" for the
large number of children who have been killed, maimed,
imprisoned, exploited in the workplace or in prostitution,
pressed into war or driven from their homes by hunger.
Some arc denied even the right to live, while others are
demoralized by the breakup of their families, he said May
6. “In the face of this misery experienced by so many
children, one is tempted wonder: Will they find love on this
earth?" the pope said.
