Vatican newspaper honors
workers killed in 1995
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Calling them “heroic wit-
nesses of the faith," the Vatican newspaper paid special
tribute to the 30 priests, religious and lay missionaries killed
during 1995.
The newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, said they in-
cluded the six Italian nuns who died in Zaire from the Ebola
virus as well as 24 missionaries shot, stabbed or strangled to
death.
Several of the murders occurred during robbery attempts,
but most were tied to political or religious conflicts.
The missionaries “proclaimed Christ even to the point of
supreme sacrifice,” said the newspaper headline over a two-
page package giving the missionaries’ names, biographical
information and the circumstances of their deaths.
Twenty-six of the missionaries died in Africa — nine of
them in Burundi, the site of ongoing ethnic violence. Two
women religious were murdered in India during 1995, and
missionaries were killed in Ecuador and Brazil.
To put the deaths in context, the Vatican newspaper
quoted Pope John Paul ITs letter on the coming third
millennium: “At the end of the second millennium, the
church has once again become a church of martyrs.”
Acknowledging and remembering the lives and sacrifices
of those whodied for their faith strengthens the lives of other
Christians and helps the church grow, the pope wrote.
Along with the missionaries who sacrificed their lives, the
seven Xaverian Missionary Sisters who were kidnapped in
Sierra Leone were honored by the newspaper. The nuns
were held by rebels for 57 days and force-marched into the
jungle before being freed.

A new year for the
South Texas Catholic
By Paula Espitia
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of
a diocesan newspaper in the Diocese of Corpus Christi.
During the last three decades the paper has attempted to
inform people from Corpus Christi to Laredo on the local and
worldwide efforts of the Church.
In 1996, the South Texas Catholic will continue in this
tradition as we cover issues in hopes of informing and
inspiring our readers. New features are on the calendar for this
year, but before we jump to ‘96, let’s take a look at ‘95.
Among several news-making items, was the announce-
ment and arrival of Bishop Rene Gracida’s coadjutor. Bishop
Roberto Gonzalez, who has been on all the backroads of the
diocese, getting to know his new South Texas family, since
his official welcoming Mass in June.
Earlier in the year James Janecek and John Ouellette were
ordained priests for the diocese. Later in the year, three others
were ordained to the transitional diaconate. A priest and three
deacons were also ordained for the Society of Our Lady of the
Most Holy Trinity by Bishop Gracida.
Many other happenings were the annual events, which the
diocese joins together to celebrate, such as the Migration
Mass, the Pastoral Ministries Conference, The pro-life pil-
grimage across the diocese. The Feast of Corpus Christi. the
Diocesan Catholic Educators Conference and the Feast of
Our Lady of Guadalupe, and many others.
As we once again cover these events and the good people
who make them possible, we hope our readers will be
encouraged to actively participate in their own parishes and
the grass root ministries that the parishes provide.
New to the South Texas Catholic for 1996 will be a section
devoted to family life, offering practical ways for parents and
children to interact as a Christian family. Other features will
include a "Generations" page which will cover issues of
value to those who have the energy and idealism of youth and
also to those who have the wisdom brought about by the
experiences of life. "Do you remember... “will be a walk
down memory lane for some and a lesson in the history of the
diocese for others as it tells of past events in the diocese.
February is Catholic Press Month and the Feb. 23 issue of
the paper will feature a readers' survey of the South Texas
Catholic. We hope everyone takes advantage of this opportu-
nity to voice their opinions of the paper.
As always, we thank the people in the parishes and office
we have visited during the year. Our staff always receives#
warm welcome from the people of the diocese.
We encourage parishes. Catholic schools and other organi-
zations to send us announcements of upcoming events which
pertain to our faith life.
We also relay an open invitation to our readers to come by
and visit our offices at the Corpus Christi Pastoral Center.
