Men honored with title of monsignor
have given and received in ministry
By Paula Coldapp
Only God can judge the so-called
success of anyone’s life, but one sign
that a person made a good life choice
is when he or she lives out his or her
chosen vocation with a sense of joy,
and that joy in turn spreads out to
others.
Six priests of the Diocese of
Corpus Christi have received the
honorary title of monsignor and
their investiture will take place in
Corpus Christi Cathedral on June 24
a 3:30 p.m. As they reflected on their
lives as priests, it is the sense that
God called them to a happy life that
prevails despite any challenges they
have faced along the way.
Given the title Monsignor by Pope
Benedict XVI are Msgr. Seamus
McGowan, Msgr. Marcos Martinez,
Msgr. Morgan Rowsome, Msgr. Mark
Chamberlin, Msgr. Roger Smith and
Msgr. Thomas Feeney. Each of the

ROME (CNS) — Before leading a
Corpus Christi procession with the
Eucharist through the streets of Rome,
Pope Benedict XVI said the sacrament
is essential nourishment for Christians
walking through an often-hostile
world.
“For every Christian generation, the
Eucharist is the indispensable nour-
ishment that sustains them as they
cross the desert of this world," he said
in his June 7 homily for the feast of
the Body and Blood of the Lord.
The world is “made arid by
ideological and economic systems
that do not promote life, but rather
mortify it," he said during the Mass
celebrated outside Rome’s Basilica of
St. John Lateran.
Ours is “a world where the logic
of power and possessing dominates
more than that of service and love; a
world where often the culture of
violence and death triumphs,” the
pope said.
“But Jesus comes to meet us and
reassure us: He himself is the bread
of life," Pope Benedict said.
The pope’s security team and Italian
police, who are responsible for
papal safety outside the Vatican,
were extra attentive during the
Mass and the procession to the
Basilica of St. Mary Major. A day
earlier, a mentally disturbed man
jumped a barricade in St. Peter’s
Square in an attempt to reach the

John Paul II High School celebrates end of first year
Challenging curriculum, faith formation,
community outreach all part of school experience
Story & Photos by

“It took a lot of courage to come to
a new school, a brand new school just
getting off the ground," said Bishop
Edmond Carmody to the first fresh-
men class of John Paul II High School,
which completed its inaugural year
with an end of school Mass on May
24.
During this year the school, located
at 3036 Saratoga Blvd., became fully
accredited and has engaged students
in an intense academic curriculum as
well as growing athletic programs,
spiritual programs, community
service, and student organizations.
Bishop Carmody concelebrated the
Mass with Father Peter Martinez,
Chaplain of John Paul II High School
and diocesan Director of Religious
Education, Father Joseph Lopez, JCL,
rector of Corpus Christi Cathedral,
Father James Vasquez, Director of
Family Life, and Father Pedro
Elizardo, Director of Worship.
The John Paul II High School
Committee for Higher Learning has
raised over $4 million for the
schools endowment fund.
Interest from the endowment is
used for financial aid.
During his homily Bishop
Carmody thanked the administra-
tors, teachers, and staff members
who have worked many late eve-
nings and Saturdays to ensure
students at John Paul II High
School “...get the best education."
“(The incoming freshmen class)
will look up to you as they look up
to seniors. You were intimidated at
first, but with the help of staff you
got comfortable. The freshmen class
will be intimidated. You will have to
help them understand it is a
challenging curriculum,” Bishop
Carmody explained to students.

John Paul II High School students, faculty, and staff celebrated their first
end of school Mass in the Immaculate Conception Chapel on May 24. The
fully accredited diocesan school is located on the grounds of the former
Corpus Christi Minor Seminary.
