Choose the right path: let the
Catholic press lead you”
By Amelia Eudy
STC Associate Editor
Thank you!
In observance of February being
Catholic Press Month, I would like
to take the chance to thank all of our
readers. We create and publish the
South Texas Catholic to keep you
abreast of what is affecting the lives of other Catholics in
the diocese, in the state of Texas and around the world.
We appreciate all the submissions and letters to the
editor that come into our office each day. We wouldn’t
be able to improve upon what we’re doing if we didn’t
have your feedback.
To give you some background, the South Texas
Catholic is one of 144 diocesan newspapers in the
country There are also several books, magazines and
newsletters. At a circulation of over 42,000, we are
considered a larger newspaper, according to the Catholic
Press Association, of which we are a member.
From them, we have received numerous awards for
our stories, columns and page design. This year, for the
first time due to our increased circulation size, we will
be competing against the biggest Catholic publications
and archdioceses in the country for these awards.
The Catholic press is a special entity of today’s media.
We cover news, events and happenings that give an in-
depth look into the achievements and challenges facing
the Catholic Church today. In contrast to the secular
press, many times reporters for the Catholic media can
get closer to the sources, including those at the Vatican,
and writers and editors have a more extensive working
knowledge of Catholicism. It’s our goal to keep our
readers up-to-date on parish events, parishioner accom-
plishments and new Church teachings. We also feature
regular columnists who write each month with the goal
of helping us develop the spiritual aspects of our lives.
We use guest columnists who offer a unique perspec-
tive on today’s hot topics. We added “The Flock”
cartoon to bring a little bit of laughter to our lives. The
Youth Page is dedicated to the issues that face our young
people every day and the wonderful things they do as
they grow in their Catholic faith. Our Faith ami Family
page is dedicated to informing parents on how to run
strong, spiritual households, and the new Vocations page
is our attempt to help more men and women find their
way to a religioius vocation and to show the valuable
contributions our current priests and sisters are making
in our churches and schools.
But in many areas, the Catholic press is struggling due
to lack of funding, support and budget cuts. As these
publications shut down, so goes another avenue for
“promoting the Gospel through the printed word."
Archbishop John P Foley, President of the Pontifical
Council for Social Communications at the Vatican
released a statement saying, “Catholic publications are
noteworthy for the sound explanation they offer of the
moral values needed to respond to most, if not all,
(moral) problems. While Catholic publications have
always been a welcome presence in every home, they are
needed now more than ever for sound moral direction
in a confused world, for spiritual enrichment in a
secular environment and for good ideas and indeed, role
models for creative Christian sendee.”
The Corpus C/iristi Caller-Times has a daily circulation
of 50,000 and 70,000 on Sunday The South Texas
Catholic isn’t far behind with a circulation of over 42,
500. The theme of Catholic Press Month, “Choose the
right path: let the Catholic press lead you” is one we
hope you, our readers, will follow as we continue to
report on the issues that affect your spiritual lives and
provide ansvrers to some of your toughest faith ques-
tions. We, despite our small staff, continue to do
everything we can to be good stewards.
New technology is forcing Catholic publications to
keep up with the times. So, if you do not have a free
moment to sit dowm and read the South Texas Catholic
each issue, please remember to visit our website,
www.goccn.org for a sampling of stories from our
current issue.
Feel free to visit other websites such as
www.catholicpress.org, which gives links to other
diocesan newspapers in the U.S. and Canada.
Also remember the diocese’s award-winning radio
station, KLUX 89.5 FM, that is another unique outlet
offering a spiritual respite from the mainstream.
Many times people shy away from television and
newspaper news because of the plethora of bad news
and sensationalism—the stories that will sell more
papers or earn more advertising dollars. While the
Catholic press remains dedicated to responsibly uncov-
ering the positive as well as the not so positive stories
that come out of the Catholic Church, we have a very
simple mission, one that doesn’t involve making money
or getting the scoop; we have a much higher calling.
Our job is to spread the Good News.
