Catholic Charities offers free HUD class for homebuyers
By Amelia Eudy
As one of its many services, Catholic Charities
of Corpus Christi offers a monthly Homebuyer
Education and Learning Program to anyone who
needs to navigate the tangled web of buying a
home.
The eight-hour class features guest speakers,
which include housing counselors, mortgage
companies, realtors, and credit counselors.
“This is very introductory,” said one woman
who attended the Jan. 21 class after seeing the
announcement in the South Texas Catholic. She
is considering buying a home and likes to
educate herself before making big decisions. “I
never would have thought I would have needed
it if I hadn’t seen it in the [newspaper].”
She was very' surprised by some of the
information presented in the morning session.
“I had no idea that its better to talk to a
mortgage company first. I thought I would have
started with a real estate agent,” she said.
The small class of 11 people was not unusual this time
of year, said Catholic Charities Director of Housing, Yiyi

Potential homebuyers listen to a presentation given by Eunice
Vidaurri of Global Mortgage Group as part of the day-long HUD
Homebuying class at Catholic Charities. The next free Saturday
session will be February 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Dean. The low months for buying a home are December
through February, but the market usually picks up in the
spring.
“We average 20-25 (individuals) per class. We like to
keep them small for more one-on-one time, so they can
ask more questions,” Dean explained.
The afternoon speakers explained ways in which
homebuyers should really look at a house, not just the
physical elements, and they warn against forming any
emotional attachments until moving day because any
number of things can happen during the buying process.
In the small, intimate environment of couples and
some single people, everyone felt comfortable enough to
ask questions, especially about their own situation.
“It’s not a blind decision anymore,” said one potential
homebuyer. “I have the foundation.”
Call 884-0561 for more information about the class.
