rT' he Pastoral Institute was founded by Bishop Rene H.
-L Gracida in 1984 to provide adult religious education
opportunities, and to support diocesan departments engaged in
preparing persons for church ministries, by providing academic
courses in spirituality, scripture and theology The Pastoral
Institute aims to provide courses which combine scholarship
with pastoral application at locations throughout the diocese,
convenient to as many persons as possible. Unless otherwise
indicated, classes meet for 13 two-hours sessions.
In addition, the Pastoral Institute acts as a clearing house for
all Diocesan Departments which sponsor workshops and
classes. The purpose is to assist pastors in the training of parish-
ioners who volunteer to help out and who want to develop skills
and qualifications to carry out specific ministries. The classes
may be attended either as independent learning experiences or
credited toward commissioning. Commissioning is a formal way
for the Bishop to recognize persons who have completed a
course of study in preparation for sendee to the Church. Anyone
interested in beginning the commissioning process is invited to
call the Pastoral Institute at (361) 814-5030 ext. 113
The courses and requirements of the Pastoral Institute vary
according to the goals of each specialized ministry. Courses may
be audited for adult education/spiritual growth, or taken for
diocesan commissioning and/or college credit.
The registration fee per course is $35. Books are additional.
Everyone is accepted into classes. If necessary, financial assis-
tance may be given through the individual parishes and the
Pastoral Institute.
Participants attending classes for continuing adult education
or diocesan commissioning register the first class session.
