Msgr. William Thompson says
he wouldn’t change a thing
By Paula Espitia
Msgr. William Thompson said regrets
have been few in his years on this earth.
“It has been a great life and 1 would not
change a bit of it for the world," said the
75-year-old priest, who recently retired
after celebrating 46 years in active
ministry. “If I had to do it all over, 1
would, and enjoy each moment all the
more!”
Msgr. Thompson reflected on his
vocation during a recent interview in the
southside home he shares with Cora, a
10-year-old Scottish Terrier.
Chancery posts under four bishops
consumed a great deal of his time, but he
always enjoyed his assignments in
parishes throughout the diocese.
His most recent assignment was pastor
of Most Precious Blood Parish, where he
served from 1990 through this summer.
Prior to that he led the faith community
of Blessed Sacrament in Laredo for 10
years and before that he served from 1968
to 1980 at Christ the King Parish in
Corpus Christi.
On the diocesan level he has been vicar
general, chancellor, vice-chancellor, the
Laredo dean, and a diocesan consultor.
Other positions include 20 years on the
diocesan school board, a member of the
personnel board, chaplain with the
Knights of Columbus and diocesan
director for the National Shrine.
Msgr. Thompson was bom on Aug, 12,
1925 in Beeville, Texas. He grew up there
and attended Beeville Catholic and public
schools through his high school gradua-
tion.
He attended St.John's Seminary in San
Antonio and was ordained to the priest-
hood on May 1, 1954, by Bishop Mariano
S. Garriga. In addition to working under
Msgr. Thompson with Cora
Bishop Garriga, he also served with
Bishops Adolf Marx, Thomas Drury and
Rene Gracida.
“Every bishop was different in his own
way. There was something to be-admired
and emulated in every one of the four. 1
learned from all of them," said Msgr.
Thompson.
He said his greatest mentor was
Auxiliary Bishop Adolph Marx, with
whom he served as assistant chancellor.
His most challenging period was
working as a chancery official during
sessions of Vatican Council 11. “Many
young priests were disillusioned, even by
their own professors," said Msgr. Thomp-
son An issue of contention was whether
priests would be allowed to marry—a
hope many young clergy had as they
waited for the conclusion of the council.
“When it didn't happen, there was
dissension, discontent and stress—it was
a very difficult time."
Some of the highlights of his active
ministry were attending a private audi-
ence with the pope along with’Msgr.
Richard Shirley and then-retired Bishop
Thomas Drury in 1988 and offering Mass
at the tomb of the Holy Sepulcher in
Jerusalem.
. He said he also felt blessed to lead the
faithful on pilgrimages to holy shrines
and sites around the world.
His consolation over the years has been
the friendship he shares with his brother
priests who have been a “strong support
! in times of crisis."
When asked what he most misses,
Msgr. Thompson said, “My flock at Most
Precious Blood.’ He said that Bishop
Edmond Carmody left him with encour-
aging words, suggesting that he now look
;! upon the entire diocese as his parish. “I
may have retired from administration, but
not from the spiritual aspect of the job. I
« look forward to helping out,” he said.
His advice to young men considering a
;-e vocation to the priesthood is: “Nothing
l <j can add more meaning to your life than
dedicating it in service to others."
