I Heart,
Wfpcud
(Lsoignmento
Father Michael Lcnihan
has been released from his
assignment as Pastor of Our
Lady of Good Counsel in
Kingsville and has been
appointed as Pastor of St.
Mary Star of the Sea Parish
in Aransas Pass, effective
June 1, 1998.
Father Piotr Kozicl has
been appointed Administra-
tor of Our Lady of Good
Counsel Parish in Kingsville
while retaining his residence
and appointments as Paro-
chial Vicar at St. Gertrude
Parish and at the Catholic
Center of St. Thomas
Aquinas Texas A&M Cam-
pus Kingsville effective May
31, 1998.
Moody Drive, Corpus Christi, TX.
Some inquiries have come to
the Bishops office concerning
the reports of unusual events
centered around the image of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, located at
the home of Mrs. Raquel V
Fernandez, 4902 Moody Drive,
Corpus Christi, TX, I wish to
respond to those inquiries with
the following initial observa-
tions.
In these cases the Church
proceeds slowly and has fol-
lowed the rule first stated by the
member of the Sanhedrin,
Gamaliel, who spoke at the trial
of the Apostles, "Let them alone.
If their purpose or activity is
human in its origins, it will
destroy itself. If, on the other
hand, it comes from God, you
will not be able to destroy them
without fighting God Himself’
(Acts 6:38 & 39). Time is the
best lest of the spiritual value of
any event reported in the
Church. The good effect upon
the faith of those involved, and
the absence of any natural
explanation, are among other
criteria to be followed in investi-
gating such reports.
As Bishop of Corpus Christi, I
am grateful for the spirit of
willingness of the community to
seek my guidance in this matter.
According to Canon 375 of
Church law, Bishops are consti-
tuted pastors in the Church with
the right to teach, to govern and
to sanctify through the sacred
worship of the Church It is
correct for the community to
look to the Bishop for guidance
in happenings such as those
reported around the image of the
Virgin Mary on Moody Drive. If
these events continue, a Dioc-
esan commission will be set up
to make a Canonical Investiga-
tion. At present, such an investi-
gation does not seem necessary.
Father James Janecek, Admin-
istrator of Holy Family Parish, at
my request, has met with Mrs.
Fernandez, and has seen the
willingness of Mrs. Fernandez to
cooperate with the Church.
There is no request for money at
the site. Anyone who experi-
ences some special help should
make a signed written statement
of what they have experienced.
As the situation is at present,
there is nothing contrary to faith
or morals in the happenings at
Moody Drive. The faithful who
gather around the image do so in
the spirit of devotion that is
manifested in any private prayer
gathering, such as the family
rosary. The teaching of the
Church should be bom in mind
that it is God who ultimately
hears and answers our prayers.
The saints, even the Blessed
Virgin Mary herself, have the
role of those special friends of
God who carry our prayers to
him, through the merits of Jesus
Christ, who suffered, died, and
rose again, and now lives to
make intercession for us at the
right hand of His Father (see
Hebrews 7:25).
May the Lord Bless you and
keep you
+Roberto O.Gonzalez, O.FM.
