Upcoming Study Days
to focus on
youth ministry
Our sisters and brothers in Iraq need our help and the situation is urgent. Now that
military action has subsided, it will be necessary to address the basic emergency needs
of large numbers of Iraqi people who are suffering. The outbreak of war has led to
disruptions in power supplies, access to safe drinking water, depleted supplies of basic
medicines, and hospitals that are overwhelmed by the injured and sick needing treat-
ment.
As American Catholics we have the opportunity to express both our deep concerns
for all the suffering Iraqis and, as a Church, to be a leading influence in the recovery
and reconciliation following a brutal regime and the ravages of war. It is essential that
we respond with a strong outpouring of emergency assistance to help alleviate their
pain and anguish. Catholic Relief Services has activated an emergency response in Iraq now that its
people are suffering from the effects of war, and CRS is ready to respond more robustly, but it will require
more resources.
In response, we will take up a collection in our diocese on the weekend of May 24-25, for Catholic Re-
lief Services emergency relief to aid the humanitarian situation in Iraq. Please keep all the people affected
by the war, including the relief workers, the civilian population, and the servicemen and women in the
region in your prayers. I ask you to give generously.
The Study Day for all priests that was scheduled for
May 1 will now be on May 8 at St. Joseph Hall at the
Cathedral at 10 a.m. It will focus on the Importance of
Youth Ministry at every parish and the importance of
pastors having an active role in youth ministry.
Msgr. William Young, pastor of St. Thomas More
Church in Houston will be the guest speaker. He is
a strong supporter of youth ministry not only in his
parish, but also with different national programs that
minister to our youth.
Our Holy Father reminds us that “Young people are
a great force in society and for evangelization. They
represent quite a large part of the population in many
nations of America. On their encounter with the living
Christ depends the hope and expectation of a future of
greater communion and solidarity for the church and
society in America.”
Any priest who plans to attend the Study Day on May
8 is also invited to lunch. Any priest wishing to have
lunch on that day must contact Olga Carrion at the
Chancery. If there are any questions about the study
day, please call Bishop Carmody at the Chancery at 882-
6191.
The same Study Day for all others that are interested
in youth ministry, will be on May 10 at St. Joseph Hall
at 10 a.m.

HOW THE GOOD NEWS GETS AROUND
2003 Campaign focuses
on media’s role in
promoting peace
The message for this year’s Catholic Communication
Campaign (CCC) is “Share a Life of Love and Peace,”
echoing the World Communications Day theme chosen
by Pope John Paul II in his call for the faithful to reflect
upon the importance of the media in promoting an au-
thentic peace based on truth, justice and love. This year,
World Communications Day will focus on one of the
most important encyclicals of the last 100 years, Pacem In
Terris, authored by Pope John XXIII in 1963. “This year’s
campaign is focused on increasing the faithful’s aware-
ness of the important role the media can play in improv-
ing our world by promoting a life of love and peace,” said
Bishop Joseph A. Galante, chairman of the Committee
for Communications of the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops.
The CCC reaches individuals through newspapers,
radio, video, television and the internet. Supported by an
annual collection, the CCC produces a variety of pro-
grams and communications tools such as the documenta-
ry Church Without Borders, which aired on ABC affiliates
around the country this year.
The CCC also supports local diocesan efforts through-
out the year, such as KLUX radio station and the South
Texas Catholic newspaper, with 75 percent of the funds
collected remaining here in the diocese.
“In 2003, CCC’s mandate has never been clearer: the
communications media must once again be at the service
of authentic peace,” said Ramon Rodriguez, Director of
house Doctors

Development for the CCC. “This year, by focusing our
efforts on spreading the Good News, and increasing
awareness of the programming, tools and resources made
available by the CCC, we hope to help the faithful foster
a world of love and peace.”
World Communication Day in the United States is
May 18 this year, and is the only worldwide celebration
proposed by the Second Vatican Council. The CCC col-
lection is held on May 18 in the diocese.
Would It Be a Stretch
for Them If You Could
No Longer Care for
Yourself?
“1“oday, we know all too well how costly it is
I to raise a family. Between buying a house,
paying the bills, and putting food on the table,
there’s not much left over for your long term
goals...such as saving for your children’s educa-
tion or retirement.
ong term care for an ageing parent shouldn’t
Lbe part of that equation. Yet these days,
many people start families in their 30’s and 40’s
- while their parents live well into their 70’s,
80’s and 90’s. If one day you require nursing
care, you might have to ask your children to
help just when they’re ready to send their own
sons or daughters off to college.
/Continuing our tradition of family protection,
Knights of Columbus Care is the newest
addition to the Knights of Columbus portfolio.*
This new long term care insurance plan helps
to preserve the hard-earned assets of you and
all your family members. Because there’s no
reason to stretch when you’ve created a safety
net.
