Father David Knight to lead mission at St. Philip Parish Oct. 27-29
Do you remember your Baptis-
mal commitments? How are you
coming as a disciple of Christ?
Still actively living as a student of
Jesus?
Come participate in a three-
evening mission on our baptismal
commitments, with a focus on
discipleship, to be conducted by
Father David Knight at St. Philip
the Apostle Parish, 3513 Cimarron.
The mission will be held October
27, 28 and 29 at 7 p.m. each evening. Father Knight will
explore five commitments with us:
1. I will interact with Jesus Christ as Savior in every-
thing I do (Christian).
2. I will be a student of Jesus Christ (Disciple).
3. I will make everything in my life bear witness to
Jesus Christ (Prophet).
4. I will mediate the life of God to others (Priest).
5. I will be a steward of Christ’s kingship, in all areas of
life (King).
Father Knight runs His Way House Center for Spiritual
Growth where retreats and workshops are held emphasiz-
ing the process he calls “Immersed in Christ - A Journey
in Five Steps.” Retired as pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Memphis, Tennessee, Father Knight suggests,
“What is lacking, with some of us, in our understand-
ing of religion, is a clear recognition of the need every
Christian has, at some point in his or her spiritual life:
to make a conscious, explicit, radical and effective act of
accepting Jesus Christ.”
Join us to hear more about conversion and the root
values of our existence.

If any parishes are interested in beginning the program
in Lent of 2004 Father Knight and Marsha Raus, Program
Director, will be available to talk to them October 27-31.
Call Marsha at 901-354-9963 or email raus@hisway.

Desire to have your marriage blessed by the church?
Workshop for convalidation process will be Nov. 16
ouples desiring to have their marriages
I “blessed by the church” are encouraged to
contact their pastors to determine if they are
free to marry in the church and attend a Nov. 16 work-
shop at Corpus Christi Cathedral’s St. Joseph Hall from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The workshop is being sponsored by
the diocesan Family Life Office.
Couples will then have the option of attending a
group ceremony at the cathedral on Dec. 6 or celebrat-
ing the sacrament in their own parish community.
“We are doing everything we can to bring people back
to the church,” said Father Frank Martinez, director of
Pastoral Ministries, which encompasses the family life
office.
“Couples should visit their pastor so they can work
together with their pastor who will continue to guide
them,” added the priest. “This is a holistic approach to
the Sacrament of Marriage.”
The Nov. 16 workshop “will be very helpful and will
be geared toward concerns people have, such as feeling
alienated and judged.”
Father Martinez said the workshop is being offered
in response to many requests pastors receive about con-
validations. “We hope this will be an annual event.”
Deacon Bob Allen, director of the Family Life Office,
said the workshop will also help couples learn to com-
municate better.
Father Martinez and Deacon Allen admitted that
couples are in various situations with their relation-
ships, including civil and common law marriages.
Many have children and others may have been previ-
ously married.
Any interested couple is encouraged to seek their
pastor’s advice to find out if they may attend the work-
shop or seek assistance in obtaining a declaration of
nullity from a previous marriage so that they may then
receive the sacrament.
Father Martinez said it’s important for all couples to
know that “God has been working in their marriage,
even in civil marriages, and this is a way to help bring
them closer and help deepen their union with Christ.”
Deacon Allen added, “Everyone has their own
journey and the church is here to assist them on that
journey.”

Kenedy Ranch Museum
of South Texas
People will soon have the opportunity to learn more
about an important part of South Texas history, with the
opening of the Kenedy Ranch Museum in Sarita.
The Kenedy Ranch was started in 1882 by a Quaker
from Pennsylvania, Mifflin Kenedy who made his money
in the steamboat business on the Rio Grande, alongside
his friend, Richard King, founder of the well-known King
Ranch.
The Kenedy Ranch has had a long a colorful history as
it was passed down through members of the Kenedy fam-
ily. When Sarita Kenedy East, the last surviving member
of the family, died, her half of the ranch was used to set
up the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foun-
dation, in memory of her parents.
The museum was the idea of the foundation and is
housed in the 1927 building of the Kenedy Pasture
Company and the
Carriage House,
two blocks west
of Highway 77
on East La Parra
Avenue. The build-
ing used to serve
as offices and an
apartment for the
ranch employees.
The museum
tells the story of
the how the Kene-
dy Ranch evolved,
the story of the
Kenedy family and
the significance of
the ranch in South
Texas history. This
story is mainly
told through three
rooms of colorful
murals created by
Mexican artist, Daniel Lechon.
Also on display are statues, artifacts, boards detailing
the ranch’s history, photographs of local people and a
video. An audio guide expands on the information and
helps to explain the story shown in the murals.
The last room, called the “Faith Room,” depicts the
family’s devotion to the Catholic faith.
“Its an honor to the community here and to the family.
It’s very educational,” said Clayton Wolter, ranch man-
ager.
The museum’s Grand Opening will be on Oct. 25
beginning at 10 a.m. Admission on this day is free to the
public and there will be free food and entertainment.
Regular admission is $3.
