CHRISTIAN RURAL
OVERSEAS PROGRAM
(CROP) TO WORK IN
KENDALL COUNTY
CROP, the Christian Rural
Overseas Program sponsored by
the Church World Service, will
hold an organization meeting for
Kendall County on October 22nd.
CROP is sponsored by all church
denominations, including Luth-
eran World Relief, Catholic Ru-
ral Life, and the Church World
Service, composed of the var-
ious Protestant churches.
At a district meeting held at
Fredericksburg last Friday, and
conducted by Mr. B. F. Gray,
State Director, the entire pro-
gram was outlined to a group of
Extension workers and Agricul-
tural organization heads. Pres-
ent from Kendall County were
State Grange Master A. F.
Leesch and County Agent C. E.
Nelson. Due to limited person-
nel, it was not possible to set a
date earlier than October 22 for
t h'e organization meeting i n
Kendall County. The County
Agent will call the organization
meeting, after which the pro-
gram will be handled entirely by
local groups.
Mr. Gray, at the Fredericks-
burg meeting, Explained that re-
ligious and agricultural leaders
in each county,, operate the
CROP Program, and it consists
entirely of receiving donations
of certain farm crops and com-
modities, which are turned over
to designated agencies for dis-
tribution on the basis of need.
Each donor designates the
church of his choice which is to
get credit for the contribution
he makes. Mr. Gray went on to
say that during the seven
months ending April 1, 1948,
CROP has assembled and ship-
ped overseas 38,726,273 pounds
of relief supplies, including 22
different items valued at $2,-
350,311.83. It has operated main-
ly in the mid-western States up
to now.
There is no connection be-
tween the CROP program and
the Marshall Plan. CROP con-
tributions are gifts from Ameri-
cans directly to the suffering-
people throughout the world and
are channeled to them through
church organizations. Therefore,
all gifts have the added signifi-
cance of promoting Friendship,
Goodwill and Chrisition Fellow-
shop, which could be shown in
no other way.
