NEED FOR CLEARING
CEDAR AND OTHER TIMBER
By Andy M. Griffin, Soil Con-
servation Service, Johnson City,
Texas
The spread of cedar and
woody vegetation over the Hill
Country has greatly reduced the
carrying capacity of rangeland.
Ranchers and livestock men
have reason to be concerned
about this problem. The deep
rooted shrubs, such as cedar,
oak and mesquite are a few of
the most promient.
For the most part, woody
plants on the range are “water
hogs”; some, like mesquite, re-
quire two to four times more wa-
ter to grow a pound of dry lea-
ves than does grass.
Pastures covered with cedar
and other brush grow far less
forage, which is of poorer qual-
ity than the same acreage can-
yield in vigorous native grasses.
More water is lost by evapor-
ation through the leaves of
woody plants each year than
runs dovs^n the creeks and rivers.
We must remember this much
needed moisture comes from the
soil on which we are trying to
grow grass. With a possible
root depth of 20 feet and a
spread up to 50 feet, the cedar
and other woody vegetation
uses large quantities of soil
moisture that would support na-
tive grass plants.
Once established this woody
vegetation spreads rapidly. On
range lands the brush which has
invaded there has caused a de-
crease of the high forage pro-
ducing grasses. This decrease
was caused by literally starving
the native grasses to death; by
livestock constantly grazing off
all the leaves. As grass stands
decreased more bare areas ap-
peared. This condition favored
the spread of invading cedar and
brush.
As it was stated in the be-
ginning, on grassland where
brush has invaded there is a
reduction in grazing capacity.
On the other hand, where a
good cover of perennial grasses
have been maintained, cedar and
other woody vegetation can nev-
er become established.

NEW YEAR PARTY
DECORATIONS MAY
BRING TRAGEDY
New Year’s Eve confetti
whirls, colorful costumes and
mountains of paper decorations
make for a gay welcome to 1949
but also present a serious
threat of fire, according to fi-
gures of the National Board of
Fire Underwriters.
Dried out trees, green
wreaths, cotton snow, and other
Christmas ornaments may still
be up by the fame New Year’s
parties bring their own dangers
in the form of party favors, cos-
tumes and decorations. A care-
lessly thrown match as the par-
ty mellows, would wreak havoc.
The fire experts advise cele-
bration with a pre-party thought
to safety.
By the time New Year’s ar-
rives, most Christmas trees in
steam-heated apartments and
homes have withered. Take
them down before the big night,
they suggest, maintaining that
most people keep up their trees
too long for safety.
Don’t use flammable decora-
tions.
If you’re planning a party,
make certain there are enough
ashtrays around the house. And
don’t use lighted candles as de-
corations.
