The question has agitated humanity
from time immemorial, aud has been
the object of tbegreatestinterest. But
the opinions have always differed very
widely, and no two minds held one
and the same. Already in ancient
times the belief prevailed that the
moon was inhabited by some higher
organized, intelligent beings, some-
what resembling man, and iu order to
communicate with them the earthly

On the morning of tho- 1st of Jan-
uary, 1868, the Harriet Lsne was tied
to the Galvostnu Wharf, while the rest
of tbe squadron lay at anchor in the
bay not far oil. The Forty-second
Massachusetts regiment lay asleop on
the wharf’near tho Lane. Thero was
no thoughts of an enemy near, when
soon after sunrise a sudden chango of
scene was announced by tho volleys of
confederate sharpshooters firing from
the roofs and windows of the neigh-
boring warehouses upon the unsus-
peotiug troops tud shipping.
The attack Lad been organized by
Gen. J. 13. Magrudor, who com
manded tbe confederates at Houston,
and who had moved his troops down
during the py*vious day and night,
and lutd silently marched them over
the railroad bridge across the bay,

cadoliq however, the idea of life on E
moon has boon held up to ridicule, and
totally scorned by men of learning.
But, nevertheless, it lias now been
proved to be correct.
By accident Dr. Blcndtnann found
lliat the observations of the moon gave
tmt very unsatisfactory result, owing
to the intensity of tlie light power of
tbe moon’s atmosphere, which is that
strong that it affects the correctness
of the observations in a very high de"
gree. He then conceived the idea to
make the object-glass of the reflector
less sensitive of the rays of light, and
paper*, which Imve l»een tiled in New • for tlxa.t purpose lie darkened it with
the smoke cf camphor. It took
months of experimenting before I10
succeeded in finding his right degreo
of obscurity of the glass, and when
finally found he then with the refactor
look a very accuiato photo of the
moon’s surface. This he placed in a
tun microscope, whioh gave the pic-
ture a diameter cf GS.j feet. The
revelation was most startling. It per-
fectly ov«r-tuxi;bd all hitherto enter-
tained Ideas of the moon's surface.
