IHE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION
Silveritcs Were Victorious in the First Contest
Between the Forces

DANIEL DEFEATED HILL FOR CHAIRMANSHIP
Many Speeches Were Made on Both Sides ln Which Considerable Temper
Was ShownMcDcrouolt Threatened o Bolt of New Jersey
Which Jttst Suited White of California
W w
Ponator Hill was polcctcd for temporary chairman by
Ihc National committee hut a minority report named Sen
ator Daniel a the choice of he silver men many npcoclicH
worn made on both side the remark of Waller of Connec-
ticut io the efl > d that the light would be kept up here
and elsewhere was construed as a threat by the gold
men Hill was defeated by a voto of 5o to M4
In his opening speech Temporary Chairman Daniel
said the East had helped the Soulh no oft oner than the
South aided the ICast said there was nothing personal in
the defeat of Hill then made an argument for the free
coinage of silver denounced the Sherman and McKinley
laws claimed that silver is now upheld only by itself and
the law making it legal tender international agreement a
fallacy
Senator Hill contrary to expectation did not speak
as the convention was adjourned shortly after Daniel took
his seat
Senator White of California was selected as permanent
chairman by the committee on permanent organization
Jn the meeting of the committee on resolutions McDer
molt of New Jersey threatened that his state would bolt or
would not support a free silver candidate and platform
White of California answered to let the traitors secede
if they want to A subcommittee of nine was selected to
consider and report a platform to the full committee
The go d men on the subcommittee on platform will
make a minority report antagonizing the position of the
majority Keagan cut oil discussion in the full committee
There is little chango in the situation of the candi-
dates Bland being in the lead but none of the others
willing to admit his likelihood of success The silver men
intend to caucus as soon as a deadlock develops
The platform to lie submitted to the committee on
resolutions will start out by claiming that the Quit of value
originally established was the silver dollar the financial
issue will bo made paramount fo all others and Great
Britain will be damned as ilia instigator of Hie gold stan-
dard issue of bonds condemned demanded thai national
banks be deprived of their right to issue notes a larifl
for revenue is stated strongly but it is also stated thai
thereshouldbeno larifl legislation until the monetary
jiiestion is settled an income tax is advocated importa-
tion of foreign labor is denounced republican extrava-
gance Federal interference in local affairs and govern-
ment by injunction and a third term of the presidency
strongly condemned
At a gold conference a bolt from the convention was
decided against but a great majority of the sentiment ex-
pressed was for knifing the silver candidate and platform
The committee on credentials will seal Hie silver con-
testants making the necessary twothirds
