Preferably, the base 12 is upstruck margin-
ally along-its side and rear edges to provide
a substantially U-shaped seat 20 -to receive a
strip 21 of heavy felt or other suitable ma-
5 terial serving- as a cushion to prevent injury
to any. finished surface upon which- the de-
vice may be placed.
In order to provide means for attaching
the bows and cover 14 to the base so con-
1o structed, -the flange or rear wall 18 is perfo-
rated at spaced intervals to -receive the head
members 22 of snap fastening devices :23,
the socket members 24 of said devices being
stitched or otherwise secured to the rear
15 lower edge of the covering 14, as will be
later explained. The tongues 16 are each
provided with a plurality of vertically dis-
posed key-hole slots 25 spaced -one in ad-
vance of the other with their larger ends
20- uppermost. It-will of.course be understood
that these slots and the perforations for the
snap fastening members 20 are stamped out
during the initial forming of the blank and
before the parts .are bent into the position
25 described and illustrated in Fig. 3.
Each tongue 16 .is provided- wih one key-
hole slot for -each frame member -or bow 13,
there preferably being three of- these bows
in order to properly spread and hold the
30 cover in position. Each of -these bows is
preferably formed- from a single piece of
wire either circular or angular in cross sec-
tion with -their free -ends bent inwardly as
shown at.26 and-headed to -provide ball ter-
35 minals- 27 proportioned to pass through the
larger -ends of the ,key-hole slots and to re-
tainthe inbent terminals -26of the bows
against disengagement from the slots when
the bows are lowered to 'let-such portions
o rest upon the lower edges of the slots. By
this -means, it will -be clear that the bows
may be readilyattached :toor detached from
the base and at the same time will not be
liable to become-casually disengaged. Pref-
45 erably, the bows vary slightly in width in
order that- upon swingingsof!the frame into
rearward or open-position, they may all en-
gage and rest upon the stops 19. Because
of this construction, -the bows will not-strike
50 upon the table, desk or:other article of fur-
niture upon which the device is employed
when swung to open position.-
The :cover proper 14 is preferably formed
of fabric, although it may sbe made of
55 leather, rubber -or any other -suitable and
flexible material-. This cover, as previously
explained, is provided at its rear lower.edge
with the socket members 24 -of the snap fas-
tening devices 23 in order :that it -may be
60 detachably secured to the rear -wall 18 of
the base and is preferably cut-away slightly
at either side as shown-at28to-engage snugly
about the stops 19. It ,is - so proportioned
that when secured to the bows, by stitching
65 -or -other suitable means, as shown in Fig. 1of the drawings, the swinging of -the bows
and cover to closed position, as there shown,
will stretch the cover in such a manner as to
completely inclose the typewriter without
resting against any part of it. The sides of 70
the, two rearmost bows are preferably sub-
stantially equal in length, while the sides of.
the forward bow are considerably longer.
These side portions of the forward bow, ad-
jacent the intermediate portion, are pref- 75
erably provided with studs 29 of rubber or
other suitable cushioning material propor-
tioned to engage against the upper face of
the supporting desk or table when the cover
is in closed position to prevent any possible 80
marring-of the surface of the furniture by
the bow. At this point it should be noted
that the weight of the bows and cover tend,
at all times, to hold the ball terminals of
the bows in the lower ends of their slots and 85
therefore to prevent' disengagement of .the
frame and cover from the base, this being
true whether the cover is in open or closed
position. It should further be noted that,
inasmuch as-all of the bows are- swingingly go
connected to the base, the cover, when in
rearward or open position, is located, en-
tirely at the rear of .the typewriter and
therefore cannot in any way interfere with
the movement of the. typewriter carriage or 95
other parts -of the ,machine, the typewriter
being positioned with its rearmost :feet 11
upon the base 12 and 'therefore holding the
base and its cover against movement. - It
will ofcourse be-understood that, if desired, 100
the base 12 may be -made- to extend for-
wardly the entireextentof the typewriter to
completely -support The latter. This,:how-
ever, is a;more expensive :construction and
usually not desirable. - =105
The above described cover may ibe readily
-and economically manufactured as the :base
may be stamped out in a single operation.
This -base is preferably:formed of -compara-
tively light sheetmetal and the entirecover 110
amay therefore be readily shipped through
the-mails. The-ready packing and shipment
=of these covers is greatly facilitated because
of the fact that the cover -proper, together
with-its - bows, 'may -be detached from the 115
-base and the device as -a -whole more 'com-
pactly packaged.
For instance, .although key-hole slots -may
be -employed, I preferably provide the
tongues 16 with key-hole .slots -of the type 120
shown in Fig. 4 in -which -the lower end is
somewhat -enlarged as shown at 30. 'The
larger upperends--of these slots are equal in
-size ato the ball -terminals of the "bows 13
and the ;slightly enlarged lower ends 30 to 125
the diameter of the :bows -13. The laterally
directed portions 26 of -the bows -arereduced
in thickness in the plane of the bodiesof thebows in -:such a manner as ito. (pass =freely
through=the -body portion of :the ;slots -when 1300
