these rolls contacting one with the other,
whereby the roll 14 carries or supports the
entire weight of the upper rolls. The upper
rolls are provided with shafts 23, journaled
5 through vertically movable bearings 24, op-
erating between the guide-bars 7. The
bearings 24 may be ball or roller bearings,
or any other suitable form of bearings.
The shaft 13 receives its rotation from a
10 pulley 25, and alternate shafts 23 receive
rotation from pulleys 26, it being inder-
stood that these rolls may be driven by any
other suitable means.
The cotton-seed or the like is fed into
15 the uppermost trough 27 from a hopper 2S,
and passes between the uppermost pai of
rolls. By means of the succeeding-troughs
27, the Material is caused to travel beneath
each succeeding lower roll, until it is dis-
20 charged from the lowermost roll.
It'is apparent that during the operation
of the machine, the upper rolls must be free
to move vertically, to permit of the passage
of the seed or the like therebetween, to-
25 gether with the solid bodies, such as hiees
of solid material. The lowermost roll being
yieldingly supported. such yielding "leais
properly absorbs the pounding and ham-
mering, caused by the passage of the solid
30 bodies between the rolls, which would oth-
erwise be transmitted to the roller shafts
and their bearings.
It is to be understood that the form of
my invention herewith shown and described
35 is to be taken as a preferred example of the
same, and that various changes in the shape,
size, and arrangement of parts may be re-
sorted. to without departing from the spirit
of my invention, or the scope of the sub-
40 joined claims.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim is:
1. In a machine of the character de-
scribed. a frame comprising guide means,
45 a plurality of superposed rolls arranged to)
contact one with the other whereby the
lowermost roll supports the combined
weight of the upper rolls, a shaft carried
by the lowermost roll, vertically movable
50 bearings for the shaft arranged within the
guide means. springs arranged beneath the
vertically movable bearings to support
them, springs arranged above the bearings
to oppose their upward movement and take
55 up rebound shocks, means whereby the
upper rolls may move vertically with re-
spect to the lowermost roll, means to feed
material to be treated between the rolls, and
means to drive the rolls. s
60 2. In a machine of the character de-
scribed, a frame comprising guide means.
- a plurality of superposed rolls arrangedto contact one With the other whereby the
lowermost roll supl1)ort the coined
weight of the upper rolls, a shaft carried i6
by the lowermost roll, vertif-ally movable
hearings .for the shaft, blocks arranged be-
neath the lowermost bearings to coitact
therewith, springs arranged beneath the
blocks to normally hove the saiie up- 70
hardly, springs arranged above the lower-
ist heari ns to contact therewith and to
contact ithi a part of the frane to oppose
upward inovement and take ip rehoind
shoe(ks, means whereby the sipper 'oils imay 75
move with respect to the lower rolls. means
to feed miterial to le treated between the
rolls, and means to drive the rolls.
3. In a machine of the character de-
scriedi. a f i er (oilmrisiiig gilde ms((ans. 80
a plulrlality of sperlplCsed rolls arranged to
contact Ine with the other where1v the
lowerimiost roll s10 p11 ports the colabi-eoI
weight of the upper rolls. a shaft carried
by the lowermost roll: hearings for the 85
shaft :uides for 'tile wlermost hearings.
said guides Ibig Hsllbstaitially wiler tiu
the giide imceanis for the i 1pper hiainrings
whereby the said ,hides have ripper hori-
zotital portions. said hearings having g their 90
tops formed flit and their . lower faces
ronilded: blocks having conave iippei faces
adapted to contact with the roiiunded faces
of the bearings, s;:iigs to move the bleks
upwardly, springs to bear between the tops 95
of the hearings and the horizontal portion
of the guide to oppose the upl)ward move-
nient of the hearings to take ip rebound
shocks, a hopper to feed material to the
rolls; and means to drive the rolls. 100
4. In a machine for grinding seed coi-
tamning hard foreign particles; an iupstand-
ing frame; a plurality of crulshillg rolls
mounted in the frame, one above the other
in contacting relation. so that the combliined 105
weight of the upper rolls i. carried by the
lowermost roll, each roll being pernio-
Siently vertically movable with respect to
the f nene, so that each roll may move away
from its 'lower contacting roll Upon the 110
passage of material therebetween; resilient
lil serving to s1ll)pOrt the lowermost roll
whereby hannering caused ly the passage
of hard particles between the rolls is ab-
srbe(l by the yielding i(eas; means to 115
drive the rolls: and means to feed Material
to lie treated therebetween.
In testimony whereof I alix~my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
