UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. HARP, OF BUFFALO, TEXAS.
CHICKEN-COOP.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
Application filed November 13, 1916. Serial No. 131,106.
To all whom it may concern: .
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HARP, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
Buffalo, in the county of Leon and State of
5 Texas, have invented a new and useful
Chicken-Coop, of which the following is a
specification.
The present invention appertains to
chicken coops, and aims to provide a novel
10 and improved chicken coop which will be
sanitary and provided with novel means to
exclude insects, snakes, rats and other
rodents.
Another object of the invention is to pro-
15 vide a chicken coop constructed of plastic
or other suitable material and embodying a
novel assemblage of the component elements,
and having novel means therein for the
nests.
20 It is also the object of the invention to
provide a structure of the nature indicated
which is simple and inexpensive in construc-
tion, the parts of which can be readily sep-
arated for cleaning, and which is practical
25 and satisfactory in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in
view which will appear as the description
proceeds, the invention resides in the combi-
nation and arrangement of parts and in the
30 details of construction hereinafter described
and claimed, it being understood' that
changes in the precise embodiment of the in-
vention herein disclosed, can be made within
the scope of what is claimed, without de-
35 parting from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accom-
panying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a front view of the coop. Fig.
2 is a plan view thereof with the cover or top
40 removed. Fig. 3 is a diametrical section
taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention there is
provided a base 1 of circular or other suit-
able contour and formed of suitable plastic
45 material, which is also true of the other parts
of the coop, although various materials can
be used. The base 1 is provided with an
annular rabbet 2 providing a seat for an
upright cylindrical body 3 forming theannular or continuous wall of the coop, and 50
the rabbet 2 provides a shoulder 4 around
which the body 3 fits to hold it in concen-
tric position upon the base.
The base is provided with an annular
trough or moat 5 surrounding the seat 2 55
and which is filled with water, so that the
moat will exclude insects, vermin, rodents,
and the like, from the inclosure or chamber
of the coop, and furthermore, the moat will
hold water for the chickens to drink from. 60
The surface of the base is preferably bev-
eled or sloped off, as. at 6, surrounding the
moat or trough 5. whereby the overflow
water can readily flow to the ground from
the moat or trough, and the provision of the 65
beveled or sloped portion 6 also prevents the
vermin or rodents from jumping across the
moat.
The body 3 is provided with an annular
series of ventilating openings 7 adjacent to 70
its upper edge, and the upper edge of said
body has an outer bevel 8 for shedding
water. A circular top or cover 9 fits within
the upper edge of the body 3 and is pro-
vided with an annular flange 10 seating upon 75
the upper edge of the body. The cover 9
sheds water to the sides of the coop.
A crescent-shaped or arcuate member 11
is seated upon the base and fits the body 3,
said member 11 being sloped outwardly, as 80
at 12, to provide an arcuate space for the
nests. The body 3 is provided with a lower
opening 13 for the passage of the chickens
into and out of coop, and outside of the
opening 13 the-body has a cut away portion 85
providing a chordal surface 14 against which
a door 15 is fitted for horizontal sliding
movement upon the base. The body 3 has a
chordal groove 16 extending above the open-
ing or doorway 13 slidably receiving the 9o
upper edge of the door, and the base 1 has
a groove 17 below and parallel with the
groove 16 for slidably receiving the lower
edge of the door. The door has suitable
means 18 whereby it can be conveniently slid 95
-open and closed.
The cover or top 9 can be removed, and the
base 1, body 3, top or cover 9, member 11 and1,214,"780.
