nal movement. It is to be noted that the re-
taining pin 32 carried by the rule section
11, is closer to the inner and of said section
than the pin 31 carried upon the section 10
5 is to the inner end thereof. This permits the
sliding member 25 to move beyond the slid-
ing member 24 when the rule sections are
positioned at an angle of 450, as clearly
shown in Fig. 2. If desired, a pin 33 may
1 0 be formed upon the sliding member 24 for
reception within an opening 25' formed in
the beveled face of the sliding member 25,
whereby said members are firmly connected
when extended to form a 90' angle. This
15 pin is received between the plates 26 of the
sliding member 25 when said member is
disposed at an angle of 45 with relation to
the sliding member 24. When the device is
folded, the rule sections 34 and 35 hide the
20 brace sections and protect the sliding mem-
bers.
From the foregoing description taken in
connection with the accompanying draw-
ings, it will be seen that I have provided a
25 simple device which may be used as a rule,
square, try-square, and miter ; which is very
simple in construction; and which is very
practical.
It is to be understood that while I have
30 shown and described the preferred embodi-
ment of my invention, I do not wish to be
limited to this exact construction, combina-
tion, and arrangement of parts, but may
make such changes as will fall within the
35 spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what
I claim is
1. The combination with a folding rule of
the character described, having longitudinal
40 recesses formed in its inner sections adjacent
their inner edges, of brace sections pivotally
secured within said recesses, one of said
brace sections being formed with a circular
opening and an edge opening notch, a head-
45 ed pin carried upon the other brace section
for engagement with the walls of said notch, and a pin carried upon said last mentioned
section for engagement with the circular
opening, said pins serving to connect the
brace sections so as to hold the rule sections at 50
a fixed angle, one of said rule sections being
formed with an opening adapted to receive
said second mentioned pin, whereby the rule
sections may be locked to form another angle
smaller than the first mentioned angle. 55
2. The combination with a rule of the
character described, of means for locking the
inner sections of said rule at fixed angles
and sliding members carried upon said in-
ner sections, said sliding members having 60
beveled faces adapted for engagement with
each other, when the rule sections are fixed
at an angle of 90 .
C. The combination with a folding rule of
the character described having inner sections 65
provided with recesses, of means for lock-
ing the inner sections of said rule at fixed
angles, and sliding members carried upon
said inner sections, said sliding members
comprising parallel strips adapted to slide 70
within the recesses formed in the rule sec-
tions, a solid head connecting said strips, the
strips being provided with slots and fasten-
ing members carried by the inner sections
and passing through said slots. 75
4. The combination with a folding rule of
the character described having pivoted sec-
tions, of sliding members carried upon said
sections, said sliding members having bev-
eled faces for engagement with each other 80
when the rule sections form an angle of 900,
one of the sliding members being formed
with a recess and means carried by the other
of the sliding members for reception within
the recess. 85
In testimony whereof I affix my sign a-
ture in presence of two witnesses.
