in Fig. 1. . Fixed to and depending from the
table 7 is a hanger 30. upon which is ful
crumed-as shown at 31 a lever 32 with which
a flexible element 33.is assembled. The flexi-
5 ble element 33 is carried upwardly about an
idler 34 which may be mounted on the table
7 as shown most clearly in Fig. 2.
. Mounted upon the pedal support 4 is an
angle bracket 35 embodying an upright arm
i0 36. provided with a bearing 37. The foot of
the angle bracket 35 is equipped with bear-
ings 38 and in these bearings is journaled for
rocking movement a shaft 39 to which is se-
cured a pedal 40. Attached to the shaft 39
i5 is a segment.41 meshing into a beveled pin-
ion 42 carried by a shaft 43 journaled in the
bearing 37, the foot of.the angle bracket 35
acting as a thrust bearing for the shaft 43,
the shaft 43 being journaled adjacent its
20 .upper end in one of the side braces 5.
Noting Fig. 2 and comparing the same
wigFig. 5 it will be observed that a wheel
45 if mounted to rotate on the shaft 43. Up-
ward movement of the wheel 45 is prevented
25 by means of a collar 46 held to the shaft 43
by means of set screws 47. Downward move-
ment of the wheel 45.is prevented by means
of a collar 48 held on the shaft 43 by means
of set screws 100.. Trained about the wheel
30 45 is a flexible element 49 carried upwardly
and engaged around suitable frame support-
ed idlers,.one of which idlers, denoted by the
numeral 50, is mounted to rotate on a bracket
51 upheld by the table 7, the ffunction of the
3s bracket 51.being to elevate the flexible ele-
ment 49 sufficiently so that .the same will co-
operate properly with the carriage (not
shown) of a typewriter.
The wheel 45 is provided with a depending
40 rim 52a within the contour of which is placed
a removable, cone-shaped clutch shoe 52 held
in place by means of a set screw 53. The
clutch shoe 52 is adapted to coperate with
the cone-shaped upper end. Of a clutch mem-
45 ber 54 loose on the shaft 43, the clutch mem-
ber 54 being provided with a recess 55 in
which the collar 48 is housed. The invention
includes a resilient bracket 56, the lower end
of which is attached to the tableT7 or.to some
o other accessible portion of the machine, the
bracket 56 comprising, as shown in Fig. 13,
diverging arms 57 provided with shafts 58
which support. the .rollers 59 engaged in a
groove 60 formed .in the periphery of the
55 clutch member 54. The lower end face of
the clutch member 54 is circumferentially
inclined as shown at 61. and is provided with
Sa shoulder 62.
A head 63 is secured to the shaft 43 by
60 means of set screws 101, the head 63 being
provided in its upper end as shown in Fig. 7
with recesses 102:in which are located wheels
103 adapted to coperate with the inclined
surface 61 of the clutch, member P4, the
et wheels 103 being carried by shafts 104 in thehead 63. Fixed to and upstanding from the.
head 63 is a stop pin 105 adapted to coper-
ate with the shoulder 62 under circumstances
which will be pointed out hereinafter.
Let it be supposed that it is desired to 70
shift from the lower case to the capitals on a
typewriter embodying a. shift key adapted
for this purpose. Then the heel of the pedal
16 is depressed, the shaft 15 is rotated, the
same actuating the segment 17, and rotation 75
is imparted to the shaft 19 through the medi-
um of the beveled pinion 18. The wheel 21
is rotated and if one of the flexible elements
.22 be attached to the capital shift key of a
typewriter, the change from small letters to so
capitals will be effected. If the toe of the
pedal 16 be depressed, the wheel 21 will be
rotated in a direction opposite to that pre-
supposed by the foregoing operation, and the
other flexible element 22, attached to the 85
figure shift key of the typewriter, will bring
the figures of the font into position.
The lever 27 may be swung to one side by
the knee of the operator, and the flexible ele-
ment 29 if attached to the proper portion of so
a typewriter, will actuate the tabulating
mechanism. The lever 32 may be swung to
one side by the right knee. of the operator,
and the flexible element 33, if connected up
with the typewriter properly, will actuate 95
the back spacing mechanism..
In order to retract the typewriter car-
riage, the pedal 40 is moved, the shaft 39
being rotated and .the segment 41 imparting
a rotation to the shaft 43 by means of the ioo
beveled pinion 42. When the shaft 43 is
rotated, the head 63 will be rotated also,
the wheels 103 cooperating with the inclined
surface 61 of the clutch member 54 and
effecting a raising of the cluth member. 105
When the clutch member 54 is raised in the
manner above described, the cone-shaped
upper end of the clutch member 54 will co-
operate with the clutch shoe 52 on +le wheel
45 and thus-the wheel 45'is operatively con- 110
nected with the shaft 43 to rotate therewith,
upward movement of the wheel 45 or a iota-
tion. thereof independently of the shaft 43
being prevented by the collar 46. When
the wheel 45 is rotated, the flexible element 115
49 will be reeled in, thus pulling over the
'carriage of the typewriter.
When the clutch member 54 is shifted in
the manner hereinbefore described, the.
spring arm 56 will be put under tension. A 120
reversed rotation of the shaft 43 will permit
a lowering of' the clutch member 54 by the
action of the bracket or arm 56, and thus,
the upper end of the clutch member 54 will
be moved out of engagement with the clutch 125
shoe 52 on the wheel 45, whereupon the type-
.writer carriage will move over step-by-step
in the ordinary manner, the flexible element
49. being unreeled off the wheel 45 and the
latter rotating freely on the shaft 43. 1*
