UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ZEDRICK ELDER, OF KILGORE, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES R.
FLOUREY, OF KILGORE, TEXAS.
COLTER.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Application filed August 3, 1915. Serial No. 43,497.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ZEDRICK ELDER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Kilgore, in the county of Gregg and State
5 of Texas, have invented a new and useful
Colter, of which the following is a specifica-
tion.
This invention relates to an improvement
in colters, and the object is in the appro-
10 priation of means for fastening the colter
to the mold board and in the mounting of
the colter upon the mold board and share.
The invention consists of certain novel
features of construction and combination of
15 parts, which will be hereinafter described
and pointed out in the claims.
Many slight changes may be made in the
form and arrangement of the several parts
described, without departing from the spirit.
20 and scope of the invention, and hence I
do not wish to be limited to the exact con-
struction as herein set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1
is a perspective view of a plow showing
25 the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a
view in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a trans-
verse vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a
perspective view of the colter. Fig. 5 is a
perspective view showing the modified form
30 of colter applied to a plow. Fig. 6 is a
horizontal sectional view through the stand-
ard and colter showing the manner of
mounting the colter.
A represents the standard or post of the
35 plow and B is the land-side connected there-
to. A mold board C is connected to the post
or standard and is supported upon a flange
1 formed on the standard. Bolts 2 connect
the mold board to the flange 1 and nuts
40 3 are screwed upon the bolts 2 for maintain-
ing the mold board in position.
A share or point 4 is connected to the
lower terminal of the mold board. A colter
consisting of a vertical blade 6 is mounted
45 upon the mold board and share along the
edge thereof or the ridge of the plow which
is beveled on one side thereof, as at 7, for
forming a cutting edge for the purpose of
cutting the sod. A lip or wing 8 is con-
50 nected to the blade 6 and extends at an
angle therefrom, conforming to the contour
of the mold board C. The wing or lip 8
is provided with openings which register
with the openings of the mold board, andthe bolts 2 which fasten the mold board to 55
the standard are passed through the open-
ings of the wing for fastening the wing,
mold board and standard together, and
maintaining the blade rigidly in position
and along the ridge of the plow so that one 60
surface of the blade is in the same vertical
plane with the land-side B.
The blade extends downwardly to the
point or share 4, but does not project the
full length of the share. The cutting edge 65
of the blade is preferably held at an in-
cline when the colter has been applied to
the mold-board.
The wing 8 is bent at an angle from the
lower side of the blade 6, and is mounted on 70
the mold-board, but extends short of the
share, that is, the wing does not extend be-
yond the lower edge of the mold-board, so
that it will not interfere with the removal of
the point or share at any time, for the pur- 75
pose of renewing the point or share.
A notch or recess 9 is formed on the lower
side of the blade 6 and above the upper
edge of the wing 8, so that in the appli-
cation of the colter blade to the mold-board 80
the notch will receive the upper edge of
the mold-board, and the lower side of the
upper portion of the blade 6 will rest against
the post A.
In the construction set forth in Figs. 5 and 85
6 the blade 6 is provided with a wing 10
which is provided with an opening 11 for
the reception of a bolt 12, which fastens the
mold-board C to the standard A. Connected
to the upper terminal of the blade 6 is a yoke 90
consisting of arms 13 which receive the stand-
ard A therebetween. A plate 14 is placed
upon the arms, which is brought into en-
gagement with the standard A and the plate
is held in position by nuts 15, which are 95
screwed upon the terminals of the arms for
fastening the upper terminal of the colter
to the standard.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I
have provided a colter which can be applied 100
and fastened to the mold-board of a plow
by the bolts which connect the mold-board
to the standard, and maintain the colter
along the ridge of the plow so that the turf
and sod can be readily cut in plowing. 105
What is claimed is:-
1. The combination with a plow standard,
a mold board, and a fastening device pass-1,180,580.
