It has rilnefl In Texas
Trom Corpns Chilstl to fhe jtcrt river
nnd from the Sabine to Kan Antonio there
has been a heavy downpour which will
be worth millions of dollars to cotton grow-
ers or the State In the tlce belt the drouth
has been relieved at n moment when con
dition were becoming most serious ana
there Is now no fear that there will fiot be
enough water for Irrigation purposes The
corn crop vrns too far gone to be saved
by any nmount of rain and tho wind which
accompanied tho rain I teporled to have
done some damage to the corn which had
managed to survive the drouth in fort llend
nnd Wharton counties
Some damage has been done by the wind
but so far there are no reports snowing
loss of life or serious Injury the damage
being conllned o far as tho reports 6how
to small houses barns corn nnd fruit trees
lhere Is a rumor late tonight of a cyclonic
wind near Kast Ifemard west of itoscn
berg but tho wires have not yet dovelopeu
the truth concerning It
The rain has extended over nearly tnc
whole of the cotton belt The plant was
suffering for rain though only In sections
had deterioration actually hegun As a rule
It was standing still neither going ahead
nor backward consequently tho rain came
at a good time Ot course too much rain
Is as bad for cotton as too little perhaps
worse but the grouud has been cry dry
and will readily absorb a gread deal or
water Ihe effect of the rain ih developing
activity on the part of the boll wceil is
yet to be determined The pest was doing
little damage while the hot dry weather
prevailed but may now dcelop energy
enough to again become a menace to the
ciop In tho affected counties However tne
rain has added thousands of bales to tho
crop In couutles where the weevil does not
exist
The rice crop has been benefited beyond
computation There was a very
complaint that the sou
general
from which
water for Irrigation was obtained were he
coming brackish and plajlng out generally
The whole of the rice country has been
ghen a drenching and the water which will
bo brought down by therivers In conse-
quence or the rains nbove will gle plenty
of water for making tho crop Tho rain
came at an opportune moment before any
great loss had been Incurred it Is believed
The corn crop la a goner but there Is
yet plenty of time for planting forage
crops and many of the reports state that
It Is the Intention of the farmers in plant
Mexican June corn malxe Ufflr corn cane
and forshum Experience has tught thit
rtwSiy
theie crops can yet be made If they are
planted at once and it Is even possible for
some late cotton to be put In tbo ground
though there Is only ono report that such
will be done Its maturity would depend 011
n late frost howover
While the great floods of 1800 started
with rains which fell June 27 only one cor-
respondent has reported any rise tbs
Ilrnios at Waco has gone up eighteen
inches but this Is not ot all serious un-
less there Is a continuance of the rains
over several days all the way from tbo
Hosque to tin gulf preventing tho channel
canylng oft the waters from aboTC Tho
Colorado will probably show a rise near
the mouth which will be very good for tho
rice farmers of Wharton and Matagorda
counties without any damage being done
