in its locking :position by the tumblers 12,.
said tumblers falling by gravity so that
their lower ends will fit into the seats or
notches 11 of the bolt. When it is desired to
5 lift the tumblers so that the bolt may be re-
tracted, the operator moves the finger piece
23 upwardly so as to raise the key 16, the
bits -19 which are disposed in the recesses
14 in the upper ends of said bits liftingthe
10 bits upwardly in the slots 7 so as to disen-
gage the lower ends of the bits from the
notches in the locking bolt. In 'this move-
ment of the bits, it will be understood that
the cross ;bar 13 will move freely in the re-
15 cess 9 of the lock body 5.
From the foregoing description, taken
in connection with the accompanying draw-
ing, the construction, manner of operation,
and several advantages 'of my 'invention will'
20 be' clearly and fully understood.
While the device is -exceedingly simple in
its construction, it is, nevertheless, also
highly convenient and serviceable in prac-
tical'. use and provides means -whereby the
5 latch or locking bolt may be quickly and
securely fastened or locked -against move-
ment or readily released when'it is desired
to open the door.
It is, of course, obvious that :such a lock
might be employed for numerous purposes,
and I do not, 'therefore, desire to be restrict-
ed to the use of the same as a 'door lock. The
invention is also.susceptible of various modi-
fications and I, -therefore, reserve the privi-lege of ..resorting to all such legitimate 35
changes as may be fairly embodied within
the spirit and scope of the invention as
claimed.
Having thus fully described my inven-
tion, what I desire to claim and secure by 40
Letters Patent is:
In a lock, a body having intersecting sets
of parallel channels in one face, and a re-
cess intermediate said channels and in com-
munication with a 'first 'set of the parallel 45
channels; tumblers mounted 'for movement
in the second set of parallel channels, a bar
connecting said tumblers and disposed
through the recess, the contact 'of the bar
with the opposite walls 'of'the recess serving 50
to limit 'the movementss of the tuniblers, a
locking bolt movably mounted in one of
the first named channels and provided with
notches to receive one end of the respective
tumblers, and a 'key arranged in 'the second 55
of the first named channels for shifting
movement 'therein., said 'key being 'provided
with means cooperating with the tumblers
to move the same in the channels 'out of en-
gagement with the locking bolt whereby said 60
bolt may be retracted.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my
signature in the presence of two witnesses.
